I have worked as a teacher and an early intervention specialist. I have also raised five children to adulthood. Currently I serve as the Program Director for Women's Health at the Knox County Health Department. Throughout my career, I have served on multiple volunteer boards and worked for different organizations. I have received some incredible leadership training as a result of my involvement. There is currently a dearth of leadership on the Knox County Board of Education. The training I have received and the experience I have gained from the positions I have held, along with my professional experience in education, make me uniquely qualified to serve on the Knox County Board of Education. My goal in life is to be known as a servant leader and that is the quality I would apply to my role on the board.
The first challenge we are facing is a lack of resources needed to pay our teachers and support staff a living wage and maintain our facilities to an acceptable standard. I want to address some of the issues that are causing a drain on our district finances, including the current fees we are paying for unnecessary legal defense. I want to apply the training I have received in lean process management from the Haslam College of Business to reduce wasteful spending and redirect funds to where they are needed. The second challenge we are facing is the unreasonable demands we are placing on our teachers. The additional responsibilities being required of teachers and support staff are staggering and must be addressed. We need to re-focus our attention on what is important, teaching children. We need to apply the process of CQI, continuous quality improvement, to determine what steps need to be taken to return our teachers to the classroom. These requirements must be dialed back so that teachers can teach and students can learn.
