How serious is Elder Abuse in your district and what action should your office take to reduce the instances of Elder Abuse in your jurisdiction?

Working with and supporting victims to achieve justice is one of our main priorities. Our goal is also to use the tools available to us in our judicial system to assure the safety of the citizens in the 21st Judicial District while working to reduce recidivism by defendants.
Our office works with the Davis House Child Advocacy Center, Bridges, and CASA to support victims within the criminal justice system. We are also active in working with and supporting the 21st Judicial District Recovery Court, DUI Court, and Veteran's Court to assure successful completion of these programs and leading offenders to a productive life outside the criminal justice system.
District Attorneys across the State have focused on Elder Abuse over the past several years by supporting new legislation to assist vulnerable adult and elder abuse victims. We participate in a Vulnerable Adult Protective Investigative Team (VAPIT) with our law enforcement partners to assure quality investigations and prosecution of those taking advantage of our elderly and vulnerable populations. We are seeing more cases, but that may be attributable to increased education and the work of our VAPIT team.
