My top priorities are 1) to increase access to affordable health care including adequately funding public health, 2) to increase funding and deployment of broadband so individuals may live, work and thrive in rural communities, and 3) leverage the Defense Production Act to bring federal dollars to District 8 to develop domestic manufacturing (such as steel, solar panels, alternative energy durable goods) and invest federal funding in research and development (such as NRRI) to diversify jobs, address climate change, and improve agricultural practices.
We must do something to address the overwhelming number of mass shootings across our country. I support the 2nd Amendment and understand that hunting is part of our national heritage. Along with the vast majority of Americans, I support background checks for all gun purchases, Red Flag laws, and measures that help keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons, domestic abusers, and the dangerously mentally ill.
Climate change is a real threat to our existence, we need to take action if we are going to mitigate the effects for future generations. I will reestablish the environmental protections that were repealed, like the Clean Water Act, and advocate for more federal funding for the EPA. I support legislation that removes the government subsidies currently available to oil and gas companies and move our country toward clean energy with a long-term goal of zero emissions by 2050.
We can create a vibrant economy when we invest in people. I will advocate for investments in education, childcare, health care, and infrastructure, including affordable housing. The Federal Reserve is using monetary policy by increasing the federal funds target rate to increase the cost of credit to address inflation. Inflation hurts families and must be addressed. The good news is that debt-to-income ratios are low, home prices are high, wage growth is accelerating, and unemployment is low.
We should pursue Medicare for All and allow the federal government to negotiate drug prices, similar to the VA. Immediately we should extend the higher premium tax credits for individual coverage on exchanges and reduce cost sharing. People should have the freedom to choose when and if to start a family and should have access to reproductive health services.
Our democracy is under attack and we must fight for its survival. I support passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to strengthen our democracy, protect voters, and remove barriers to voting that impact many communities across the country. I oppose voter ID laws and any legislation that intends to disenfranchise voters. We need to make it easier to vote, with automatic voter registration, mail-in ballots, a national voting holiday and more voting days.
