As a legislator, I would advocate for working families by focusing on economic security, racial justice, and removing systemic barriers that prevent community members from taking part in the economy. I would do this by: addressing climate change because we have a responsibility to protect the environment for future generations; investing in education so children can access quality education no matter their zip code, income, or background; and championing healthcare including fighting for paid family/medical leave for all Minnesotans.
Minnesota has a legacy of ensuring safe and secure elections while empowering people to vote. Policies by the current Secretary of State have made Minnesota the #1 state in voter turnout for the last three years! As a legislator, I would support policies that expand the right to vote, including restoring voting rights to people who have served their sentence. I would also support expanding access to voting, including automatic voter registration.
Utilizing a lens for equity and justice must be threaded through all policy decisions. We know that disparities exist across multiple systems, including healthcare, public safety, education, economy, and environmental justice, disproportionately affecting low-income and BIPOC populations. As a legislator, I would follow the lead from POCI caucus and BIPOC legislators because communities know the solutions that work for them.
While difficult to address inflation as a state legislator, I would support policies that provide relief to working families so they don't have to struggle to make ends meet. Policies include increasing the minimum wage, supporting businesses owned by women and people of color, and providing paid family/medical leave for all Minnesotans.
It is clear we need stronger policies around gun safety. As a mom, I have enough to worry about. I shouldn't have to worry about my daughters' safety at school. As a legislator, I would support red flag laws, limiting civilian use of military grade weapons, increasing education about the safe use and storage of guns, investing in mental health services, and closing loopholes for violent offenders.
