If I’m elected to the Minnesota State House of Representatives my first priorities will be about learning how I can represent the people in my district. I would need to build a means to communicate with constituents. I would join the civility caucus, where I could find likeminded Representatives. There aren’t many in government, but I would find those (both Democrat and Republican) that prioritize working across the aisle. I would need to make as many friends as possible so I can learn the job. To me this job, like life, is all about relationships. My real work will be to be a force for change. I want to influence Representatives to be better collaborators so we can better serve Minnesotans.
I would want to continue and support the good work of accountability in elections. I would support continued training of election judges. They are the ones on the front lines! I would passionately support the continuing of mail-in ballots, early voting and absentee voting, military, abroad ballots, curbside voting for those with disabilities. The more ways we can vote, the more of us who will vote. We also need more explanation for how to vote.
I believe that local communities are the best places to solve community problems. I would work to create Community Engagement Committees, so people could solve the problems their own community faces. Police and racial advocacy groups need to come together to make plans. We need to find ways to increase accountability and prevent racial profiling.
One of the most important sectors for new job creation is in technology and climate change. We need to find ways to support innovators and entrepreneurs in the new and future areas of the economy. Finding ways to train people for the new and emerging jobs is crucial. We need to support small businesses, and try to remove obstacles as small businesses move to medium-sized businesses. We need to reward companies that pay a livable wage.
I would support the ban on assault rifles, with a voluntary buyback program for gun owners who wish to sell their assault rifles. I would support the prohibition of high-capacity magazines, bump stocks, and other accessories that convert guns into assault rifles. We need universal background checks, eliminating loopholes and exemptions. I would support raising the purchase age of guns to age 21. I would also support red flag laws.
