My top priorities are funding quality public education, climate justice, and public safety. I attended Minneapolis public schools from K-12, and as the executive director at 826 MSP for the last 5 years, I understand that our curriculum, teaching staff, and policies don’t provide mirrors for students of color like myself to see ourselves reflected. As a result our city and state have terrible gaps in educational outcomes. As a new mom I want my child to be able to live in a Minneapolis and world that has clean air and water and has sustainable green workforces. In 2020, South Minneapolis became the epicenter of a fight for public safety and racial justice. I’m running because we can continue fighting in this moment of repair and change.
I support restoring the right to vote of people who have been incarcerated, automatic voter registration, true vote by mail and early voting with increased voting times, locations, and language access, and a permanent absentee voter list. Expanding voter education, helping folks create voting plans, and overall diversifying the methods of voting and spreading voter traffic would help ensure safe and secure elections.
I support the recruitment/retainment of teachers of color with livable wages and culturally appropriate curricula. I support increased funding for electrified public transportation and pedestrian/bike infrastructures, public/affordable housing with energy efficiency, programs to retro-fit homes, and cooperative ownership of energy. I support increased access to education, vocational training, healthcare, universal childcare, and renters’ rights protection.
Businesses are the heart of a community, especially small businesses. I would support the strong organizing to receive support for and investments in good jobs with benefits, equitable conditions, and community-centered small businesses. Inflation is a multifactorial issue and policy-making around it is based on forecasts because of the real-time lag; I would listen to the best economists on how to slow economic growth and advocate for programs to support those most impacted by inequity.
I support expanding background check requirements; empowering family members to petition a judge for an Extreme Risk Protection Order; requiring gun owners to store firearms securely; educating the public about the role firearms play in our suicide epidemic; prohibiting gun possession by domestic abusers; funding localized violence intervention; prohibiting public open carry; and enacting police accountability measures that train deescalation, transparency, and elimination of unnecessary force.
