1. Maintain a Stable Budget. In an era of cheap money and high inflation it becomes all too easy to blame the macro economic issues for large budget increases, however, as a leader of an organization it is our job to be forward thinking and make responsible investments so we don’t have to play “catch up” in the future. A stable budget is especially good for those on fixed incomes and it is what I consider to be the #1 priority in this position. 2. Address Labor issues. It is becoming increasingly hard to keep a full roster of staff and there are more open positions in the marketplace than workers. 3. Appropriately spend the ARPA money on one-time capital projects that provide a return for the taxpayer and saves tax levy dollars.
I recently appointed a board member to the County’s Economic Development Authority who has experience working with developers who may request tax increment financing for more housing. I believe we will accomplish some partnerships through our EDA. Our administrator also has an EDA background and will be helpful.
By asking questions about how things logistically work, knowing who touches what and listening to feedback from staff and constituents.
We have an excellent team of social service workers and I’ve been on the human services committee for my entire tenure. The basic challenges are funding which was shifted from the state to counties in past years and limited availability of mental health treatment facilities.
Highway workers, first responders & law enforcement and social services.
I will focus my attention on building positive professional relationships with employees, and retaining and hiring quality county employees that are dedicated to serving the citizens of Becker County. Positive employee relations with mutual trust are essential to having an effectively run county. I will focus on supporting and improving law enforcement and public safety. We need to retain quality law enforcement works and hire more quality law enforcement workers. Another one of my big concerns is the budgeting and management of tax payers money. As a small business owner for the past 17 years, I have extensive experience with conservative management of money.
I will educate myself on what is driving up the cost of housing in Becker County and what county board decisions can be made to help offer relief to the citizens of Becker County.
I have had discussions with members of the team that work the elections in Becker County. The information that I gathered assures me that Becker County does an excellent job to make sure all elections are accurate and valid.
As a teacher at Detroit Lakes High School, I have witnessed the increased need for mental health services in Becker County. Mental health issues are one of the biggest problems that people face in their lives. The biggest challenge that I have observed is the availability of services offered to citizens. This shows me that there is a need in Becker County for more mental health services.
I want to state that all of the departments in the county are very important. The areas that I see as essential are: law enforcement, human and social services, IT, and public safety.
