Slowing the increases, we have seen in property taxes would be my number one priority. With the current rate of inflation, we need a commissioner that understands the budget process and can make the difficult decisions concerning annual budget expenses. My record as a previous commissioner speaks for itself. If elected one of my top priorities would be a commitment to filling a leadership role on the joint powers boards each commissioner is appointed to. I served as committee chair on the DNR invasive species advisory board and the Minnesota Rural County Caucus board. During this time, we ensured continued funding for the county AIS prevention program established the Greater MN Trails and Parks board, which helped build Brophy Park.
The county and city HRA boards seem to be at odds over turf and who does what where. I would work to bring these two entities together to team up rather than working against each other. We are trying to achieve a common goal of affordable housing.
Elections laws are decided at a much higher level of government than the county. The county must follow those statutes as written. We can however ensure voting judges have the training needed to do a good job. Processes need to be in place to help ensure everyone gets their vote counted once.
Mental health has never been funded at the level of need, Family and child intervention seem to be the path we need to be on. Events lately have shown us the importance of effective and early treatment. These are in short supply. Wait times to see a trained professional can be weeks or months. Douglas county does not have a crises bed or facility available, which forces people to the hospital and not given long term help. Horizon Public Health is currently looking at this area of need.
This would not be one person’s call regarding cutting an essential service. Essential lends itself to something we need and expect, law enforcement, roads and social services. Cuts must be based on input from our county residents I would advocate to support the Veterans and the services they need. This may not fall into the essential service category, but I would argue that without their service we would be a much different nation.
