I am proud to have served with the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office for nearly a quarter century, with the most recent years as your elected Sheriff. My past positions include, deputy, sergeant, lieutenant and captain. Leading requires service, leadership, experience and compassion. All of these traits were instilled in me by my faith, family, community and love of being a peace officer. I am proud to be a life- long resident of our county and enjoyed watching my children attend my school. We all have experienced our growth and I recognize our need to remain the best place to live, work and raise a family. To do this, we must continue our focus providing professional law enforcement service to our residents and our visitors.
Mental health issues in our community and illegal drugs continue to be a challenge in our communities. We have implemented expanded services and options for mental health assistance calls and our jail population. Additional personnel have been added to our drug investigative unit and our BLADE Brainerd Lakes Area Drug Education programs has been instrumental in our community outreach. Looking ahead, we must focus on identifying and hiring our next generation of personnel to serve our people.
We are on the edge of a national staffing crisis for law enforcement. This is apparent in the negative headlines, the reduction of students in college classes and in the applications for employment. The sheriff’s office identified this problem early and has implemented new hiring, staffing and retention programs to seek out the best applicants and ensure they are a valued member of our team. Once hired, we continue to look out for our people through peer and employee mental health support.
The world we know and live in is littered with one second headlines and the expectation of instant information. This often does not coincide with the processes and laws that are in place in law enforcement to preserve case integrity and protect the victims of crime. I am proud of the work we do to keep the public informed through social media, press releases and our open lines of communication with our local press. As, technology changes, we continue to adjust in how to best reach the public.
I lead in the manner in which I was raised. Be honest, caring, fair, work hard and have fun. These values are shared with our administrative team and are handed down to those we supervise. I feel that our mission statement best sums up our approach to serving the public and what our office stands for: The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office is committed to providing public service that is beneficial to all members of the community through leadership, experience and compassion. Thank you! Scott.
