My experience, and my commitment to serving my entire career in Fillmore County are what make me the best candidate for this position. I have worked for the Fillmore County Sheriff's Office for 25 years as a deputy/jailer/dispatcher, Undercover Narcotics Investigator, Patrol Sergeant, and Captain before being elected Sheriff in 2018. This has given me a great variety of experience in providing for public safety in Fillmore County. It has also given me working experience in every part of what the FCSO does. I have maintained a humble, learning attitude throughout my entire career, helping me grow and learn constantly. I am lucky to be surrounded by great staff, and work for a wonderful community who supports and appreciates what we do.
1. Continue to grow the connection that we have with our community. This enables us to recognize what issues affect Fillmore County, and how to provide effective solutions. 2. Maintain our current full staffing levels. Many agencies are struggling with recruitment in these difficult times, and their public suffers. we are lucky to be operating at full staff. 3. Continue to work with the county board towards a solution to our aging jail jail which does not meet state DOC standards.
Our biggest challenge right now is recruiting new deputies in this challenging social climate. We are lucky to be at full staff, but must take action to ensure that we can attract future candidates. We put a high priority on honest leadership. We believe strongly in accountability, and that starts with the Sheriff and Command Staff holding themselves accountable. This sets an example for the staff, and provides for a supportive and professional team.
In a small county like ours, the best way to maintain transparency is for the Sheriff to be engaged with the public, and always make him or herself available. I do this as a practice, maintaining good communication with our citizens, and always making sure that if someone has a concern or a question, I make time to talk with them and address their concern. We work for the citizens of our county, and a big part of that is being accountable to our people.
I believe first and foremost in accountability. We have a wonderful group of employees who are very dedicated to their duty. A good leader gives credit to the troops when things go well, but takes responsibility for the organizations shortcomings. If we make a mistake, we will hold ourselves accountable internally, but I will be accountable to the public. If a leader expects their employees to be disciplined and hold themselves accountable, that leader must set the example.
