The most important issue in 3A01 is how residents get around. 3A01 has two new, large developments within its borders: City Ridge and Upton Place. As more residents, shoppers, and others arrive, we need to tackle the resulting issues surrounding pedestrian safety and transit. With a lack of adequate pedestrian crossings on many of our streets, we are ill-prepared for potential increases in vehicular traffic. As a Commissioner, I will work diligently to address this situation. I will strive to hold our elected officials and the relevant government agencies accountable and communicate the progress and challenges faced to our community as I work to keep our neighborhood a safe and enjoyable place to stroll. Our district does not have reliable public transit. Many of our residents feel it necessary to have a car. This needs to change. As a Commissioner, I will advocate for better, more reliable transit. This is best path to averting a crisis in the availability of street parking.
ANC outreach is vital to improving our district’s quality of life. Many issues in our district, such as neglected public spaces like the Newark St Playground, are long unaddressed because our residents need a better connection to their local government. I strongly believe ANCs should aim to be that connection. As a Commissioner, I will use every means available to reach our district’s residents. I will meet them in person. I will communicate with them online using list servs and social media. I will engage with local organizations that represent them like associations, apartment managers, and others.
What do ANCs need to succeed? The answer to that question is simple. ANCs need more support from our elected officials and DC government agencies. This year, hundreds, if not thousands of residents learned more about ANCs due to the redistricting process. It is imperative that our Council and the Executive do everything in their power to facilitate that engagement through this election and beyond. The Office of ANCs needs a permanent executive director who will do more to support ANCs across the city so that each one can effectively engage with and advocate for its constituents.
