Duties: Serves as a member of
the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC). Commissioners represent the
views of residents of their
Single Member District (SMD). After deliberation and votes, the ANC
Commission advises the Mayor, Council and executive agencies in local
matters such as parking, zoning, traffic, liquor licenses, permits,
Professional experience in housing and real estate. Community/tenant organizing experience. Public space experience.
2 things. Public safety and Implementation of CT Ave Bike lanes.
I plan to work with the agencies and MPD to ensure that traditional and community policing measures are being used to address public concerns with safety. I plan to ensure that apartment building security is sufficient.
People have valid concerns with proposed roadway changes and do not feel their input is being taken into consideration. I hope to talk to constituents and ensure their concerns are smoothed over as roadway changes are made. I have experience working with public space occupancy constraints and hope to use my experience to make this process go as smoothly as possible.
I plan to engage in communication via twitter, next door, email, phone and as much face to face communication as possible. Voters/potential constituents are given my personal phone number so they may contact me with any concerns they have. I have already been an active member of the community for many people within the SMD as a volunteer with the Van Ness South Tenants Association. I have advocated for people who have problems in their apartments that have not been fixed by their landlord. We have developed relationships at DCRA and other agencies through our advocacy. I plan to build on these relationships and expand them to other agencies and other circumstances so that I can be an effective liaison between the citizens and the district government.
Describe a picture of the ideal ANC Commissioner: Someone who makes themselves available to hear the concerns of constituents, who listens to all concerns big and small and thinks of creative ways to solve them in a way that everyone feels comfortable with to the best of their ability.
The most important issue facing my Single Member District is crime. Due to a string of major crimes, people are not feeling safe in the neighborhood and many feel as if crime is increasing in the area. Some of these issues include theft and intimate partner violence. The reasons for these crimes are complex and must be dealt with in order for people, especially women, to feel safe again.
I intend to address it by working with city agencies such as the Department of Behavioral Health and the Department of Human Services to identify the causes of these crimes along with interventions to prevent them from happening again. We must make all of our residents feel safe in their neighborhoods and this can be addressed by advocating for them when communicating with these agencies. These agencies have the power to provide resources for our community so we must utilize them to the fullest extent.
There are many ways to connect and engage with residents. In addition to our monthly ANC public meeting, engaging people via various online groups and social media is a great way to meet people where they at. In addition, participating in local events such as farmer's markets and seasonal events will allow me to listen and reach out to residents who have concerns in person. It is important that I offer as many ways for residents to reach out to me so it provides as few obstacles as possible.
I am no stranger to explaining to people what is the role and value of ANCs and I hope I can continue educating people about this so they can take an active role in the community and the ANC. I especially look for People of Color and Women's voices because they represent parts of our community that need a voice and I want to make sure I can support them with whatever they need.
The question I wish you would have asked is why am I the best candidate for the role. I have been an ANC Commissioner for over a year and have been involved with the ANC for over two years. My greatest achievement so far has created a Schools & Universities Committee that I was asked to make because of my work in education. I have the experience to not only have a wealth of knowledge about the ANC but also know how to organize and advocate for my constituents and I want to keep doing so for another term.
In addition, I also recognize the importance of marginalized voices in the ANC and will continue to empower those voices in the ANC. I have enjoyed working in a female-majority ANC because it helps me to understand different perspectives and use them in my decision-making. Also, being a Person of Color and a Queer person allows me to look at issues in a different way and I reflect on my social identities to help in my policy-making.
