Resident of the community for which I'm running since April 2018. I am a prior civilian with the U.S. Navy and have been engaged in government work for the past 12+ years of my career, most recently and currently consulting at the local, state, and federal capacity.
One of the most prominent and ongoing issues facing ANC SMD - 4E04 is the Northern Bus Garage Reconstruction Project and the health, safety, and environmental implications (among others) to the community as the project advances. Given the landmark falls solely in the redistricted SMD, it is incumbent on us to ensure not only we, but our surrounding community are considered and represented through all stages. My plan is to enhance my engagement in the community meetings around this project, taking an active role to affect the outcomes that concern our residents at-large. I will continue my grassroots approach to familiarizing myself with our neighbors, hearing their voices, and understanding what short and long-term affects any plans in this regard may have in preserving the history of our community while equally supporting its advancement.
The engagement that I have found to be most effective in our neighborhood is a hybrid approach of meeting community members where they are, at their homes, in their favorite community locations: schools, restaurants, and parks, and creating those opportunities to allow them new experiences, engagements, connections, or otherwise opportunity to connect with the community in ways that are less accessible. By just showing up on so many doorsteps, I have found that our neighbors are longing for insight and education as to how we can become more involved. That outreach cannot be selective, out of convenience, comfort, or assumption, but rather must be genuine, impartial, and intentional. Through this approach, I am excited to serve and enhance our community and its connection with our government.
It is important to speak to the unique nature of this non-partisan, neighborhood body and their purpose to bring government and the people closer together. While it is an elected position, it is a voluntary, unpaid, official voice of the neighborhood to advise the government on those issues affecting our community(s). So, I would ask, "what is your motivation in running for this position?" For me, I am motivated, and inspired, by the incredibly diverse lifestyles, thoughts, and values that can exist in such a densely populated region that is otherwise perceived to be broadly seen as one political affiliation. I recognize the challenge in all the nuance within such a culture, how delicate it is in its criticality to the success of our ecosystem. The challenge of preserving history, tradition, and often comfort, while considering our role in the sustainability, competition, and rapid advancement of the world around us is immense and exciting. I am here to address it with our community!
