DC ANC 5B05 Commissioner

Duties: Serves as a member of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC). Commissioners represent the views of residents of their Single Member District (SMD). After deliberation and votes, the ANC Commission advises the Mayor, Council and executive agencies in local matters such as parking, zoning, traffic, liquor licenses, permits, etc.

What is the most important issue facing your Single Member District and how do you intend to address it?

How will you engage with residents to be an effective Commissioner, especially reaching those who are unfamiliar with the role and value of ANCs?

Qualifications Since being sworn into office in 2021, I've been proud to serve our community with collaborative, responsive, hard-working leadership. Together, we've made our neighborhood cleaner, safer, and more connected. In just 19 months, I’ve devoted nearly 1,000 hours working with neighbors to better our community. I’ve helped to lead neighbors in a push for improved traffic safety in our neighborhood, securing dozens of effective, meaningful traffic calming and infrastructure improvements in under two years. I’ve led several community clean-ups that have kept more than 100 bags of trash off our streets and out of our waterways. And I’ve helped neighbors in need, from residents who needed assistance making aging-in-place modifications to their homes and seniors who needed handicapped parking placards, to neighbors who were faced with utility shut-offs and couldn’t get their application for energy assistance processed in time. I believe now, as I did in 2020, that our community is truly better when we work together, and that is what I hope to continue to do as your ANC.

The concern I hear about most frequently from residents is traffic safety. Roads and sidewalks help keep us connected to the people and places that are important to us. We use them to visit friends and neighbors, take our kids to school and go to medical appointments, run errands, and get exercise. But when roads feel unsafe, sidewalks deteriorate, and crosswalks fade, the simple acts of walking, biking, or driving can become dangerous—and even deadly, as our community is painfully and acutely aware.

Since taking office in 2021, I've worked tirelessly to to secure dozens of traffic calming and infrastructure improvements throughout the community, including speed humps, all-way stops, sidewalk repairs, roadway repaving, and more. Communication and transparency are the hallmarks of good governance, and since taking office, they have been my top priority. I’ve worked very hard to provide timely and responsive communication to my constituents, and to increase my outreach so residents know how I can assist them if they ever need help.

For instance, I’ve quintupled the size of the 5B05 email list, which now reaches 12% of residents, up from only 2% prior to my term. I’ve also proactively solicited resident feedback on issues affecting our community, sending out emails, maintaining an updated and informative website, and distributing paper flyers to residents about things like development projects, liquor licenses, and major roadway projects in their immediate neighborhoods.

Qualifications I have served as commissioner for the single member district in which I live, 5B05, on five occasions: from 2008 to 2010, 2010 to 2012 (when it was 5A06), from 2014 to 2016, and 2016 to 2018 and for 2019 (to complete the unfinished term for Landon Jones who moved out of the single member district).
Mixed use development proposals for our business areas and for our ANC single member district section of the Brookland/CUA Metro station are an important concern which should be monitored by residents and their ANC representative. Throughout my years of service, I have been particularly focused on tracking and reporting large scale development proposals affecting 5B05. I represented 5B05, and residents within 200 feet of the site particularly, during the planning stages for the EYA development for the new houses between Varnum and Allison, at the Josephite Seminary site. I represented the community during the planning and building of the Children’s Hospital garage parking facility adjacent to Perry Place. I plan to continue to monitor such proposals, share information with residents and carefully consider zoning variance requests.
I would participate fully with the commission as a whole, meet with constituents monthly in hybrid meetins and respond quickly to constituent emails and phone calls. I would share information on the community's role in Fourth and Fifth District Law enforcement, Zoning Commission matters, Historic Preservation Review Board issues, as well as Department of Transportation and Liquor Control Board issues to ensure full community participation in 5B05.
In my previous terms of service, I worked to assist neighbors in my single member district and to assist Commission 5B as a whole. I served as recording secretary for all my terms. I represented the community during the planning and building of the Children’s Hospital garage parking facility adjacent to Perry Place. I was very involved in offering testimony for the Commission concerning the recently approved Comprehensive Plan for the District of Columbia voicing Commission concerns about affordable housing, tracking of the fulfillment of developer offered amenities, open space preservation and preservation of neighborhood character. I supported the efforts of residents near the Howard Divinity Campus who were concerned about the Future Land Use Map zoning for that 20 acre site. While this site is not in 5B05, I believe that large development proposals are a reason for all citizens in 5B to work together for the best interest of our section of Ward 5.
