While there are many pressing issues in my Single Member District, I believe the city wide lack of affordable housing is especially acute. Hyper local decisions about what to (and what not to) build can have far ranging effects on housing access across DC. We need more “missing middle” and alternative housing such as accessory dwelling units (think carriage houses or tiny houses) and strategic densification close to Metro stations. I also think that biking and walking infrastructure in the SMD, while heading in the right direction, can be vastly improved.
I think the best way to engage with residents is the simplest: go out and talk to people in the real world. While social media does enable the communication of ideas and concerns quickly and on demand, it is not a substitution for talking to someone. That is the best way to develop durable relationships with people who are, ultimately, your neighbors and reach everyone from the most engaged to the least aware of the ANC’s role and duties. I have had more success in explaining what an ANC does talking to someone face to face than digitally. However, some digital outreach is warranted. I personally prefer to use the media of emails/newsletters. I think it is more engaging and gives more space to articulate complex positions and issues. 280 characters just does not allow that sort of nuance.
How will you take steps to address climate change?

This is another area where hyper local decisions can have huge impacts. While some action does need to be taken at the city-wide or region wide level (such as building and energy codes), local decisions (such as supporting density and implementing walking and biking infrastructure) are going to be key in making our targets to keep warming to safe levels. Both buildings and transportation are major drivers of carbon emissions. Addressing the affordable housing issue has the corollary impact of allowing more people to live in a walkable, urban area. Addressing the transportation issue means more people wanting or able to walk/bike, instead of taking a car trip.
