St. Joseph City Mayor

The role of city mayor can vary from city to city. However, the mayor is usually the head of the city and may represent the city in front of other government bodies. A mayor also usually has a role in proposing a city budget that is approved by the city council. The budget influences the services the city provides to its residents. Mayors sometimes are voting members of city council, and in some cities the mayor is in charge of city council meetings.

How will you work with your community to promote public safety in our neighborhoods? (500 characters)

As a person who feels the best relationships are based on trust, I listen to all points of view and seek out voices across the community before making decisions. I am highly transparent in my actions, and I will call on the council and the staff to be the same. After all, our city works for the people, not the other way around.

As our beautiful city of Saint Joe continues to grow, I believe the voice of the people matters much more than those in government. Our role is to involve you: college student, immigrant, Indigenous, descendant of immigrants, business owner, or faculty. You are a central part of our progress. Your opinion matters, even if the city has never asked you before. It’s a weak mayor system for a reason - we grow together.
I will work with staff and residents on a city vision and mission statement. Most great organizations our size have clear missions everyone works from, and so should we.

I will ask the council to clarify our appointments process to commissions and boards. Residents deserve a transparent governing body to serve our community.

We need to improve our processes of completing projects and listening to residents, including students. I want to support open, authentic, positive change together.
A huge part of safety comes from knowing each other. We are an actively growing community with a small town feel. As we open businesses and welcome new residents, our local charm also helps us watch out for each other.

The council hires an administrator, who oversees police, fire, road, and facilities staff to keep people safe. Staff should know residents. Staff should also feel heard. Last year I realized the fire chief did not have a voice at council meetings, so I requested a seat for him.

The buck stops with me. I accept responsibility for those decisions within the city which get singled out as issues. That is, I will not ever pass the blame for bad decisions onto others nor take credit for good decisions for myself. As mayor I’ve done my best to be better prepared for growth by serious and continuous planning efforts, along with those governance rules that play a part in any enforcement. Many of the policies presented have been designed to portray the current state of our community, but support the comprehensive plan, goals and vision for St. Joseph. I come prepared to participate in discussions by dong my own research and reading related materials prior to attending meetings, sessions, committees…etc.
Since I’ve been mayor, I’ve put extended effort and time into seeing a community center come to fruition. It is the Community's #1 Priority. One of the areas we have improved is the area of youth activities for children in the summer, but we need to continue to grow activities for youth as well as other age ranges. With the expansion of activities, comes the need for better facilities, Pickle-ball courts, skateboard park, basketball courts and trail expansion.
Safety is a plus in St. Joseph with much lower-than-average statewide crime rates and hospitable surroundings. Our neighborhoods are strongest when police work with community members and businesses to Identify and meet their needs. Our Police Department is ready, available and visible, creating a safe and secure climate. I meet with school officials, college administration, businesses to understand safety needs. We have initiated better lighting and will soon have city surveillance cameras
