I am a psychologist, and the mother to a recent Marshall graduate and a current Marshall student. I have lived here for 13 years and raised my children here. I have participated in community events as a parent, leader, professional and business owner/yoga teacher. I currently serve on the library board and am a founding member of the MORE Network, a local organization which promotes anti-racism. As a parent and in my work, I have seen the impact that our schools have on children, the way they support children and sometimes the way that they fail to do so. No school system is perfect, just as none of us are perfect, but we can work together to help our children become responsible citizens and critical thinkers.
1) Having our school board and school leaders reflect the composition of our students and families so that they can see themselves in us and also know that we see and understand them. 2) Creating space for students to feel safe in a variety of places in our schools. Children learn best, in fact they can learn only when they feel safe. 3) Listening first to understand and working together, even when we disagree. Can we engage in respectful dialogue when we hold differing opinions?
As a psychologist and human being, I believe that the safety that we need to create together is EMOTIONAL safety. Can we hold space for others when they are speaking and act with respect towards all? We cannot hope to create a world that is entirely safe, that isn’t the world that we live in, but we can create safe relationships with each other and with children. When we do this, then even when difficult things happen, large or small, we can work together and support each other.
