I was appointed to a vacant position on our school board in July. I am a big believer in public education. I am a product of MAPS, my wife is a teacher, my girls will soon enter kindergarten, and I am employed in higher education.

I see the stress all of our school staff and children are under and how crucial ensuring their wellbeing and success will be to the future of our community. Our district faces significant challenges and I am running to ensure that our district embraces the opportunities that lie before it. But it’s easy to say that. To get there, we will need competent, experienced leaders on our board. I bring 15 years of experience in education and workforce policy and the relationships to get us where we need to be.
1) Quality representation: I am first and foremost accountable to the public. I bring an open mind, a focus on listening, and a commitment to represent my community well. 2) School culture/safety: I hear concerns from parents and teachers about behavior in our schools. Learning cannot occur in a disruptive environment. Priority on school safety and mental health supports also. 3) Innovation: Embracing new models of education that support teachers and more work based learning opportunities.
As a board member there are a few priorities that will be top of mind for me when considering safety: 1) Ensuring that all of our school facilities have secure single points of entry. 2) Focusing on student mental health 3) Keeping school resource police officers in our schools 4) Proactively identifying threats 5) Addressing student behaviors against teachers and other students

As a veteran teacher from ISD77, I have first hand knowledge of the daily operations of our schools, the struggles that staff currently face, and the hardship of the pandemic on education. Our teachers are this district’s greatest asset, yet they are leaving this district and profession due to unobtainable work loads, stress, and lack of support. I believe we need a teacher’s perspective on the school board as we make decisions that directly impact our students, staff, and budget. I bring that perspective, the ability to ask difficult questions, listen to all stakeholders, and work with others to find solutions.
1) Support our teachers through manageable class sizes, sufficient time, safe working conditions, and student behavioral support. 2) Transparency in decision making: To build trust with families, community, and staff, we need to have open conversations, listen to other viewpoints, and understand cultural differences; enabling a stronger, safer, and more cohesive district. 3) Student success: achieved via a safe learning environment, responsible technology use, and equitable learning experiences.
School safety starts with having high expectations for all students, accountability for student actions, consequences, and restorative practices. Our students learn best when they have a safe learning space, so we need to update our current practices to reflect the needs of our learners in a post-pandemic environment. This has to be supported from our district and building leaders first, providing teachers with the needed authority and resources to keep their classrooms safe.

I have been a parent in the school district for a long time and will continue to be a parent in this district for many years to come. I have both a 12th and 10th grade student at Mankato East High School and a 5-year-old who will start kindergarten next fall in 2023. I have been a very active business owner and employee in Mankato since 2000. I have expertise in accounting, finance, and insurance throughout my overall professional career. I have been the president and/or treasurer for many organizations such as the Mankato Kiwanis Club, Camp Patterson, Twin Rivers Council for the Arts, CityArt, Open Arts Minnesota, Christ the King Lutheran Church, and NAIFA of Southern MN. My leadership and financial skills really set me apart.
First, we need to determine how to turn around our net loss of 500 students over the past couple of years. We can't have a thriving/growing community yet continue to lose students. Our school district should be growing & that should be a priority of all residents who live here. Second is safety. West High & many of our elementaries don't have single point of entry that is secure. We need to correct that soon. Third, every child in the district needs the same opportunity to be successful.
As a school board member our task is to emphasize priorities of the board & then direct our superintendent to make those priorities happen. Not only do we need secure, single point of entry on all of our schools. We need a safer environment for the teachers in their classrooms amongst the students. Some of these issues can be solved by the board. As a parent, I believe many of these issues are the responsibility of the parents. We need to hold parents more accountable, myself included.
