Why are you the best candidate for this position? (750 characters)

If elected, what will your top three priorities be and why? (500 characters)

How will you work with staff and teachers to promote safety in our schools? (500 characters)

I've been a father to three boys in this district for 20 years and I’ve successfully built teams and cultures in my profession. I have significant ISD110 and people experience. I am also a good fit because I feel I am running for the right reasons. I am not looking for power, to push an agenda, or to pad my resume and I never thought I'd be in a public facing role. I am NOT a conservative, liberal, republican or democrat. I am running for this office because I am a concerned father who wants to help where help is clearly needed.
Number one is tax dollars. Waconia is in statutory operating debt due to poor leadership and a lack of checks and balances. I will help get us back on track. Number two is curriculum. I want to help take a fresh look at what we teach and how we prepare our students for the real world. Number three is political correctness. PC is out of control and I'd like to help lead us back to values and measurements like grit, determination, and kindness instead of color, gender, and sexual orientation.
I think every school should have a trained and armed guard walking the halls. It's an unfortunate reality. I know I would feel more comfortable dropping my children off if there was an armed security presence in their schools. I otherwise feel schools are safe. Imperfect, but generally safe.

I believe my skill set matches the current needs of Waconia’s ISD 110. I have worked on for-profit and not-for-profit boards, including my own electronic medical record software company. Through these, I have had experience handling many different financial models as well as updating and implementing constitutions, bylaws, and long-term vision plans.

I am not a candidate who will be flashy or loud, and I am not interested in grandstanding. Right now, ISD 110 needs someone who wants to do the work of the board. That work entails policy setting, budget & financial review, and administration accountability. I want to do that work so I can positively impact our district both today and in the future, setting our kids up for success.
First, to protect itself and its teachers and employees, District 110 must maintain a positive budget to build its reserves and eliminate SOD.

Second, communication is key to building and maintaining trust. I will ensure we are building bridges of communication between teachers, staff, the school board, and parents.

Third, I will focus the district on the things needed to help children succeed. As a board member, I will sift through the noise allowing staff to focus on helping our kids shine.
To promote safety, I will listen to students, parents, staff, and teachers and make sure their feedback is integrated into the district’s safety plans.

I will also review student and personnel policies to make sure they align with state requirements as well as address local concerns.

Finally, I will encourage the district superintendent and staff to work closely with the local sheriff, fire, and health officials to develop plans to meet the needs of our unique community.
I don't think I am the "best" candidate for this position. I feel I have the best understanding of what the position represents and can best fulfill the duties associated. Each candidate run on a campaign platform. Should they win the seat their job is to facilitate those campaign promises. School board members are place holders (the voice) for their constituents. Our job is to best represent those that put us in the position and that is what I plan to do if elected.
Financial transparency and getting out to SOD is easily my number one issue. I take the expenditures of my tax dollars as well as tax dollars of all community members very serious. We have work to do! Second would be bridging the divided between school board and district faculty and staff. I've met with many teachers and I hear over and over again about how they don't feel heard. That will change for the better. Finally education over indoctrination. Let's get back to the basics of education.
I would review the current guidelines in place. See if there are areas to be improved and then work with the board to fine tune those areas. These decisions affect many people/areas of the district so input would be needed from many different stakeholders as well.

I am passionate about public education and parental involvement in our children’s academic endeavors. I am a leader that values integrity and transparency. Our son has special needs and I am invested in special education and understanding academic challenges in our district. My specialized degree as a Neurological Speech Language Pathology/Brain Injury Specialist has prepared me to work with people of diverse backgrounds and develop exceptional communication skills. I will work to establish a community of students whose learning potential is maximized and have a sense of responsibility. I am committed to strengthening and giving back to our community through mentoring young professionals and lifelong participation in community service.
First, prioritizing student achievement by instilling a strong work ethic and using data to measure progress and outcomes. Encourage exploration of educational, technical, and vocational fields. Secondly, increase communication and transparency from the board to teachers and community members. I wish to launch a Question and Answer Town Hall every 3 months. Finally, work diligently to get ISD 110 out of debt to reward and retain our teachers and build a foundation of fiscal responsibility.

Academic success for students is best attained in a secure, safe environment. We need to provide clear and concise guidelines to parents from teachers on discussing safety. Our students need to know they are respected, valued, and have a voice to reach out if they have concerns. We need to encourage teachers to build relationships with students and staff. School emergency preparedness policies should be regularly reviewed by the board and administration and updated, as necessary.

My past experience on a school board and my career as a teacher are just 2 reasons I feel qualified to serve on ISD 110’s school board. I had the privilege of serving for 5 years on the board of a public charter school. I received state-required training for charter school board members about board responsibilities, finance and employment matters. Our board worked closely to balance our budget and maintain strong finances.

I have taught for 25 years, both in-person and online. I understand curriculum, the diverse needs of students and how to support teachers. As a teacher and parent to 3 unique children, I will keep the education of all children at the center of the board’s mission.
First, ISD110 must recover from statutory operating debt. We can restore our district’s financial stability and still focus on the academic and emotional needs of our students. I will prioritize retaining and attracting quality teachers. Teachers need the time, training and trust to do their jobs, along with fair compensation. Finally, I will look forward for community growth. Now is the time to ensure our district is welcoming, inclusive and providing quality education for everyone.
Children learn best when physically and emotionally safe. This requires a multi-faceted approach. ISD110 has invested in locks, an alert app and other security. Regular practice and audits can confirm continued effective implementation. Trust is crucial. Communication with staff and community must be transparent and accurate. Increased focus on students’ emotional health can reduce risks of violence. Students can learn to express feelings, cope with emotions, and support others.
