How will you work with staff and teachers to promote safety in our schools? (500 characters)

My husband & I were both raised in Red Wing & are Red Wing graduates. We have been married for 14 years & have 3 children. I studied Psychology & Business at the University of MN Duluth, and Mesa State College, CO. After living in Colorado and Texas for many years, we moved back to the RW in December of 2021. My career over the past 20 years has been in management of dental offices, where I enjoyed working with people & used my business background to find cost effective solutions for both patients & doctors. Not only am I passionate about helping others, I believe I can bring a new perspective to a to a town that I love & believe in. Our experiences in various school communities have provided insight into how other school systems function.
*Increase accountability measures for staff & students to improve safety for all. *Advocate for competitive wages & hiring processes to find the best educators & increase staff retention. *Allocate more funding for fine arts & athletic programs. I support the AAA philosophy of Academics, Arts & Athletics. These "extras" are often the glue that gives children a place to fit in, increased self-esteem & respect towards others. Statistics show that kids who are more involved have higher successes.
I think there are several components when talking about safety in our schools. We need to regularly update school safety plans & make sure to establish clear policies and reinforce goals. Our plan should clearly outline the expectations of students, administration & parents. We need to actively work with everyone to enforce accountability. When rules are imposed, the majority tends to follow. When rules are broken, we need to take action with consequences.
I had the privilege of teaching 5th and 6th grade children in our community for 32 years. I was known as a caring teacher who put her students' needs first. I built collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and board members. I've watched or attended most board meetings for the last two years. My experience as a teacher gives me a unique perspective that is needed on our board. I've worked hard to understand the issues facing our children and families because of the pandemic. I am a passionate supporter of public education who is committed to being an effective board member. I will listen to the community, do my homework, and always put the needs of our children first.
We must attract and retain high quality staff in all areas. We must provide a quality education for ALL students regardless of race, gender, social-economic status, or ability. We must recover lost learning and provide supports for our students' mental health. The pandemic was a huge challenge for our staff and students. With declining enrollment, we must provide staff with the resources they need to ensure a high quality education for ALL learners so they reach their highest potential.
Students need to feel physically and EMOTIONALLY safe in our schools. In August, our board met with public safety officers to review our active shooter plans. I applaud that effort. I will continue to support staff development and curriculum that promote equity in teaching and learning practices. I also support PBIS and other district programs that support students in managing their emotions and resolving conflict respectfully and peacefully.

I am rerunning for School Board in Red Wing. I want to run and represent the many who feel their voices have not mattered. I want to ensure a safe, healthy, respectful and well-managed Educational System for all staff and robust education for our children. The job of the School Board is to hire and manage an engaged, educated, experienced and compassionate leader who can then hire the same in staff and entrust that they have what it takes to meet the ever-changing needs of public education. The Superintendent leads the Mission and Vision and the School Board assists that person in doing so by developing policies to support a pillar of society with the mission of preparing for the future. I know how to do that job, and very successfully
Staffing and Funding-Redo the messaging behind public education and how to support, sustain, encourage and uplift all who enter the field. The Career of a teacher or educator in Public Education is very critical in creating and sustaining a democracy, that is fair and just. Safety with internet, personal devices, technology, social media, outside forces and overall social, emotional, physical safety of everyone in the schools or in the district.
Listen to the teachers, honor their work, ensure that the leaders are using collective voices when making decisions. Supporting the PERLA process and seeking to understand rather than divide. Teaching is a calling for some early in life and a vocation for some at other times. Brilliant humans teach and they know a tremendous amount and when they are relegated to a “less than” position in the general public and society it is demoralizing and causes staffing issues, safety concerns, and stress.
