I have been on the school board for 5 years and it has been a great learning experience. We have a very high functioning board. I am now positioned to be a more informed voice on the board. I participate on 2 committees: the policy and procedure committee and the negotiation committee. These 2 committees meet regularly and especially the negotiation committee has been very active over the past 12 months. My husband and I have been in Willmar for 28 years and have had 4 children graduate from the Willmar Public Schools, all of whom were prepared for post-secondary opportunities by their teachers and the opportunities they received in our local public school.
1. Teacher retention/recruitment-we need to have excellent instructors and keep them here. We value and support the educators who are in front of students everyday. 2. Student retention-obviously this is our "customer" and if there aren't students in our schools, we cannot thrive in the academic or the extracurricular opportunities the students have. 3. Student experience-the student of today learns in ways unimagined 25 years ago and we need to keep striving to meet the needs of all.
We have policies and procedures in place to protect all the people in our buildings. Safety is not just violence prevention, but includes health and wellness . We continue to engage the community in helping keep schools safe. Our resource officers are excellent in our schools as well as our school counselors and administrators. The staff relationships with our students also promote safety in a number of ways. We engage with parents in communications and timely information as needed.

I have experience in many leadership roles including the Planning Commission, leadership positions in multiple organizations. I was on the school board during the COVID days where we worked with the superintendent to make decisions to keep our students and staff safe. Most importantly I have a heart for our schools. I am also involved with two youth running programs as well as helping with our XC and Track meets.
Number one is providing a quality educational experience for all our students. I would like to see our struggling students get caught up as well as improving our four year graduation rate. Secondly we are preparing to replace Dr. Holm soon as he retires. Certainly not lastly making sure our teachers have the resources to provide a quality education for our students. We need more gym space at the middle school and we have been working on getting 25 districts to commit to SWWC.
Attempting to find the gaps in our safety nets and coming up with ways to close them. Providing training to our staff on identifying behavior that might be a red flag. Providing assistance to parents in the district who are experiencing troubling signs in their children.

I am a mother of three adopted children. My oldest is in 8th grade, my middle is in 5th grade, and my youngest attends a family daycare. I am active in their education and enjoy working with their teachers to best assist their education. I have valued education for myself, with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Delaware and a Doctorate in psychology from Widener University (Chester, Pennsylvania), and I value education for my children. I believe that a meaningful education can provide a better sense of self, a better ability to think critically, and an increased respect for the bigger world around us. I want to protect their right to education in an environment that supports that growth.
My top three priorities are 1) defend, pay, and value our teachers - Teachers and support staff are the lifeline of the schools and for the children.; 2) school safety - The pandemic, school shootings, and abusive behavior toward staff have made many schools unsafe places to work or learn; and 3) improve community relations in the special groups/classes related to race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender expression, or ability .
I think it is best to evaluate the research to determine the best way to promote safety. Since we are about education then we need to reap that education through published studies that have evaluated these concerns.
