I am a School Board incumbent, first elected in 2020. But I have been involved in District 834 for more than 25 years as a classroom volunteer, districtwide task force member, leader of levy efforts and dedicated fundraiser for enrichment efforts in the schools. I understand the details of how the district works, but as a resident for more than 30 years, I am grounded in the community and understand what it expects of its schools. Since I joined the board, we have begun addressing growth in the south by adding on to Brookview Elementary and implementing boundary changes, persuaded the community to pass the first ever technology levy, and hired an experienced permanent superintendent. But there is more to do, and I am eager to do the work.
We must continue to address the explosive growth in the south. Our district is healthy and growing, but all the new students need schools in which to learn. Three years ago, a task force recommended building a new elementary school--or perhaps two--to deal with the growth. We must revisit those recommendations and also address the near-capacity middle school. We also must address student achievement, which has been impacted by the pandemic and curriculum development cutbacks in previous years.
Safety in schools is a topic that everyone can support. There are dedicated funds that come from the state to support building safety improvements. Stillwater has a new permanent superintendent, who comes to us with fresh eyes, and I look forward to seeing what he recommends to make our buildings as safe as possible.
