STSD school Board member (previous )
STSD needs to address the W. Salisbury Elementary building . Elementary students need a school in their neighborhood to reduce busing time to the single current building . Building a new school or renovating the existing building would give our students a neighborhood school. This decision would reduce class sizes, allow for greater flexibility in teaching and learning, allow full day kindergarten, while insuring social distancing for students & staff during a pandemic if needed .
STSD needs to upgrade the curriculum ( STEM focus) in both courses and facilities.
We need to improve our schools Pa ranking to be comparable with our neighboring districts. We need to prepare our students to achieve success in our technological future.

Qualifications
As teacher, coach, parent, official, student, and volunteer, I am uniquely suited to be able to view issues from many perspectives. I have worked in the education field for over 17 years and know what is necessary to effectively run a district.
We must strictly adhere to all CDC and state mandates to continue safely educating students. Compelling school officials to work closely with local health experts aids planning specifically tailored to our community. Each district needs to keep abreast of continuing scientific research and state Education Association recommendations in addition to preparing necessary contingency plans. The health and well being of our children, school staff, and community members is paramount. Local education agencies need to actively monitor the physical, social, and emotional well being of the families it services. Continuous isolation and lack of support or meaningful interactions poses mental health dangers as serious as physical health threats.

The safety of our learners will always be the top priority. Focus on three key areas will ensure the educational environment remains effective while also remaining safe.
1. Establish a communication plan that will outline how the district will handle modifications to its educational structure. Eliminate surprises to ensure everyone impacted can contribute to its success.
2. Remain versatile. Continue to invest in technology that will improve the virtual learning experience, while using government funding to improve the aging buildings in the district.
3. Establish trust with the community and remain accountable for the decisions that impact the district. Be responsive to the feedback of the teachers, administration, parents, and students.

My current experience as an elementary teacher, parent of 3 successful Salisbury graduates, 30 year Salisbury Homeowner, and my background in business (family owned over 12 years) gives me a uniquely broad perspective as a school board director.
I will continue my support in keeping our elementary, middle and high school a safe and healthy place to educate our children by staying informed, listening to families, and understanding what it is like to teach young children during a pandemic. I think that Salisbury students have the right to be taught in person, in a classroom with other children, in order to receive the highest quality education. I believe in the professional ability of Salisbury teachers, staff and administration and the caring, informed involvement of Salisbury parents to ensure students are following our health protocols. I support listening to families for their insight in order to continue to be strong partners in the quality education offered at Salisbury.

It’s my 16th year on the Board. My engineering expertise has been beneficial in cost effective school renovation projects. No other candidate has my level of experience in school construction to benefit our upcoming capital building program.
We have been and will continue following the science regarding the return to in-person learning. It has been determined that there is minimal risk for students and staff to be in school. The social harm inflicted on our students and staff outweighs the slight risk of contracting Covid-19 with the precautions we are taking. Our elementary and middle schools are back full time. We are maintaining social distancing guidelines along with mask wearing and sanitizing measures. As the guidelines continue to change, we will be able to bring our high school students back full time as well. I understand the difficult family issues surrounding Covid and look forward to a safe return to normality.

I have been a school board director since July 2020 and president of Salisbury’s Pennsylvania Association for Gifted Education for a decade. I am president of Salisbury’s Education Foundation, a member of the Wellness Committee, and was in the PTA.
Throughout this pandemic, I have diligently and continuously sought information about the ever-changing guidance regarding health and safety protocols by participating in bi-weekly webinars presented by the American Public Health Association, by listening to numerous podcasts presented by public health experts, and by consulting local medical personnel about best practices. I will continue to consult expert medical sources when debating and deciding how to best fulfill our district’s charge to provide each student with an appropriately challenging education. I will also continue to support our faculty and staff’s innovative ideas for how best to deliver that education, no matter the mode of delivery.

Continue listening! I will continue to listen to all parents and students who have feelings and opinions on this topic. I will continue to listen to the healthcare professionals who offer us direction based on knowledge available. I will continue to listen to our teachers who are with our students day in and day out. Based on all this information I will continue to make the best possible decisions to help keep our students safe both physically and mentally.

While a virtual option is necessary for the near future, we can take measures that can be paid for by money coming from the stimulus bill to improve safety:
-Improve airflow in our buildings. The middle school’s HVAC system needs to be replaced and the windows at the elementary do not open.
-Implement rapid antigen testing within our schools while community levels are high.
-Exercise flexibility with learning spaces. Purchase canopies and seating to create outdoor classrooms and use cafeterias, gyms, and libraries at all times.
-Increase teacher training and collaboration time. Survey teachers to determine what they need and look at ways to expand planning time and offer voluntary, additional paid training outside of contract hours.

Continue to serve the students and staff in every aspect that I can make a difference which includes their safety to be in buildings for environmental issues, and pandemic reasons. My input and votes will continue to put students and staff in the front of all my decisions. My goal and wish is to continue to serve and see tasks that have been started to completion. To investigate and hopefully have new curriculum choices as in the past for our students. Provide support for professional development and course materials for our teachers. I strive to be all inclusive to all stakeholders – students, staff, parents and guardians. I am very passionate about this district as a former student, parent, volunteer and Board member.
