Colton Fire District #70 Position 3

Special districts in Oregon are formed to govern specific resources. Examples are people’s utility districts, library districts, sewer districts, irrigation districts, ports and cemetery districts. Some districts get revenue only from taxes. Others, such as water districts, get revenue from ratepayers. Others may combine the two sources. Each district is governed by a board of directors which is responsible for the operation of the district and its financial accountability. Primarily by inviting them to attend the fire board meetings, either in person or virtually. Using the Colton Fire website can be used to increase fire awareness and keep the community informed of district activities, which would require active participation in keeping the website up to date.
I have spent 12 years as a volunteer firefighter, in various capacities such as an EMT-I, rope rescue team member, apparatus operator, lieutenant, duty officer, trainer, mentor, as assistant fire chief for operations and safety officer. This has given me firsthand knowledge of the inner workings of a volunteer fire department, at multiple levels, its resourcing requirements, and the time and dedication it requires from its volunteers. I have seen what a fire board can do for a department in helping or, through negligence, hindering its goals to protect the volunteers and community its members have been elected to serve.

As a board member for PNWSAR, the search and rescue team I was on, I dealt with many of the same issues a fire board does, including resourcing and volunteer recruitment and detainment.
Use of technologies such as the district website and social media to keep the community informed, and to provide a means of feedback from the community to the fire department. I would support the use of outreach programs wherein the firefighters and officers provide inspections and recommendations to home owners on means to protect their property from wildfires and structure fires.
