Upper McKenzie Rural Fire Protection District Dorector Position 3

Special districts in Oregon are formed to govern specific resources. Examples are people’s utility districts, library districts, sewer districts, irrigation districts, ports and cemetery districts. Some districts get revenue only from taxes. Others, such as water districts, get revenue from ratepayers. Others may combine the two sources. Each district is governed by a board of directors which is responsible for the operation of the district and its financial accountability. ( https://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/198.010 ) Qualifications: Candidate must be a registered voter or an landowner in the district. If the district has a supporting ordinance, employees of the district are not eligible. ORS 478.050Salary: A member of the governing body of a district may receive an amount not to exceed $50 for each day or portion thereof as compensation for services performed as a member of the governing body. Your Experience/Qualificatons Corvallis Rural Fire Protection District (CRFPD), Budget Committee Member; UC Berkeley (Data Science); Johns Hopkins (M.B.A.); Virginia (B.A.)
I plan to distribute an email update on a regular basis, no more than monthly and new less than quarterly. This update would include information about what decisions are ahead of the fire protection district board and solicit feedback about positions as well as other items that should be put to the district board. The distribution list would also be a forum for sharing information about preparing for wildfires, including resources, videos, etc. from the OSU Extension Service. These have been very helpful for me as I prepare to serve in this position. Lastly, in addition to electronic communications, I would also host in-person sessions to make myself available within the district.
I have been a member of the budget committee for the Corvallis Rural Fire Protection District. This is a very well organized and operated district, so I intend to transfer best practices from this district to another. The fire risks and challenges facing the Upper McKenzie Rural Fire Protection District are arguably much greater than those facing Corvallis RFPD, so qualifying to serve both districts is a privilege and responsibility. Beyond RFPDs, I have also served as a private contractor with various U.S. federal agencies and, early in my career, as a congressional intern on Capitol Hill.
Knowledge is power, so my intention is to 1) democratize power by sharing information about the district and its priorities (e.g., transparency), 2) share lessons learned and best practices in wildfire preparations and risk reduction (e.g., OSU Extension), and 3) most importantly, build relationships and trust with rural residents to better represent their needs. I plan to empower people to realize results!
