I don’t know if I am the best candidate. All three candidates running for City Council this year are good people who care deeply about their community. What I can say is I have learned a lot during my first term about what it takes to be a good council member. I’ve learned that running a city the size of Albany is an expensive undertaking and councilors need to remember that every dollar we spend comes from taxpayers. I’ve learned to become a better listener. I’ve learned to take the long view when thinking about what’s best for the city. I’m eager to continue learning over another term on the city council. If residents are happy with the direction of the city over the past four years I respectfully ask for their vote on election day.
If re-elected my top three priorities in my next term are: Continuing to make investments in maintaining and updating infrastructure in the city. We owe it to future residents to keep up now. Continuing to focus on giving our police department the tools and resources they need to maintain their high level of commitment to public safety. We want them to continue with their great work. Working hard to keep city budgets and tax rates stable. Volatile budgets and tax rates aren’t healthy.
Ensuring public safety is a primary responsibility cities face. City staff and council proposed a nearly 23% increase in the police budget for 2023. Much of this is dedicated to increasing our level of full time police dept. staffing. We approved continuing the partnership the city has with the school district in providing a school resource officer for the 22-23 school year. Finally we plan to work hard to keep our wage and benefit package competitive in order to keep our current staff intact.
