We have 3 children that have graduated from ISD728 schools and 3 attending. We have lived in Asia and Europe and understand diverse learning and cultural environments. The USA is the best place in the world to live when it comes to freedom and educational opportunity. My corporate experience in being a director dealing with budgets, deadlines, hiring/firing, and handling business issues both in domestic/international contexts have given me a broad range of experience that would fit a board level role. Parents/taxpayers need a voice at the local level to ensure they are heard, and their concerns are addressed. Our focus needs to be on core academics and to have the best schools in the nation.
1) Ensure parents/taxpayers are heard. The current school board has made it hard for them to be heard by prohibiting recording of public comments for online review on the ISD728 website. 2) MN state statues require parents to be involved in the selection of curriculum and it is not happening. Parents need to know what their children are being taught and be a part of the process. 3) Safety and security. Parents need to know that their children are safe from violence, harassment, and bullying.
As a plant manager I had quarterly meetings with employees and spent time out with my employees at their work locations. It is important that board members understand what is happening on the front lines and to engage frequently with the people that make our children’s education possible. We need to spend time listening and put together policies that will ensure the safety of all our students. Once a policy is established, hold the administration accountable for implementing.
