I am thoughtful, reasonable, and committed to building community. I offer a broad array of skills that will enhance the Board. I have project management experience from co-founding an international nonprofit. I am a skilled facilitator and have led conversations between government leaders and Fortune 500 executives. I bring financial insight from my time as a Wall Street investment banker. As a professional literary, performing, and teaching artist, I am an expert in communicating ideas and cultivating connection. Most of all, I am a parent of a kindergartener and second-grader. I volunteer weekly in my sons’ classrooms, and I will be active in the Brainerd schools for the next 13 years.
My first priority will always be to ensure the best education for every child, ensuring that we meet students where they are, as who they are, every day. My second focus will be to remedy the achievement gaps exacerbated by the pandemic. Last, but definitely not least, I will endeavor to revive community connections with better communication and transparency. I will lead efforts to bring the stories of the school to the community and make it easier for the community to see into the schools.
To promote physical, mental, and emotional safety for every student, I will lead community conversations around essential safety measures, involving students, educators, and families, with the goal of crafting a comprehensive safety program. I will work with educators, staff, administration, and fellow board members to create policies that ensure the safest educational environment within our power. Finally, I will advocate for and help create an updated emergency plan for our updated buildings.

I am a current ISD 181 school board member with 4 years experience providing oversight for our district operating budget, superintendent and making informed decisions regarding policy and personnel. I helped provide leadership to navigate our district through the recent pandemic. I understand the challenges ISD 181 faces. I have 3 children within ISD 181 which provides me an up close and personal view of our school district and how district policies impact students, families and staff. I am an active, visible school board member, consistently taking part in many district wide activities. I have 24 years of large budget management experience in higher education. I will provide continuity and experience to our school board.
Provide fiscally responsible direction for our school district operating budget ensuring a balanced budget annually allowing us to effectively educate our students in a fiscally sustainable manner. Continue to move the dial toward improved district transparency by increasing purposeful collaboration and effective communication with our community. Demonstrate and promote commitment to academic excellence in order to retain students, draw students back and recruit new families to our community.
I will collaborate with district teachers and staff to determine areas of need for student and building safety. I will encourage transparent communication to promote connections as well as needed prevention opportunities. I will promote relationships among teachers, staff, law enforcement, emergency personnel, mental health professionals, parents and students before an emergency occurs. I will support collaboration with law enforcement and emergency personnel to enhance existing emergency plans
I have a degree in Public Relations and a board member should be doing constant PR for the district. I have many years of board service through multiple organizations and am active in our community through volunteerism. Currently, I am the assistant freshman football coach and head sophomore baseball coach for ISD181. With my wife teaching at BHS, two children in our schools, and my coaching experience, has allowed me to be one of the most in touch candidates with the happenings of our district. I have great relationship building and communication skills vital to this position. I was born and raised here, am a PROUD 98' graduate and am raising my family in this community. I will bring my passion for our school to this position.
Unity, Safety, Experience. These are three points that certainly have levels underneath them. We need to bring our district together. We need to look at our mission for ISD181 and make sure we are all headed in that direction. We need to make sure our kids and staff feel safe and provide them with the very best experience in the classroom and in extra curriculars. Attitude reflects leadership. This is a team! In order for us to be successful we all need to do our part to get ISD181 back on track
Safety is a top priority for me. We need to ensure we have all the proper policy and procedures in place to make sure our staff and students are safe. Training is key. Staff and teachers at ISD181 will be trained on our safety plan. There will be no question on what to do in any safety situation that comes up. I spent 11 years as a firefighter, first responder and attention to details and training are vital to not only be ready for a safety situation, but preventing it from ever happening.

I believe I am the best candidate for ISD 181 because: My passion to improve the quality of public education in our community. I am sincerely dedicated to learning. I believe everyone can achieve at least grade level success. I am driven by improved outcomes and performance. I believe decisions should be based on the best interests of the community, not individual constituents, or single-interest groups. I respect others’ views and have a strong desire to work to build consensus. I am not imbedded into the status quo if it’s not producing the desired results. I have a commitment to public service, not personal gain or ambition. I am a college instructor/ program director with a Masters in Teaching finishing my EdD in Educational Leadership.
After speaking to parents, students, and teachers, these are my priorities. I will attempt to pass and enact policy on a parent’s bill of rights. I will support parents being engaged in their child’s education. I will provide greater transparency into the boards decisions. Focus policy to raise academic standards in Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Ensure ISD 181 has a successful safety plan, tools and training to identify students or others who may have a potential to cause harm.
I have 42 years in public safety as a police officer, firefighter and paramedic. I can ensure effective policies to cover cyberbullying/ bullying, cybersecurity, infectious disease, mental health, and targeted violence. We need to ensure we have up to date emergency plans, to include recovery, training, exercises, and drills. These need to be done secondary to threat assessments conducted yearly. I will champion evaluating the districts physical security, violence prevention and reporting.
I am an accessible and connected representative with a commonsense approach. My experiences as a parent, professional, former educator, and community member offer a well-rounded perspective at the board table. I am invested in children and opportunities for all to reach their highest potential. Raising my children in the district, I see the direct impacts of leadership decisions and committed staff and teachers. I am interested in and connected to the work in the district through volunteering in the schools, supporting music and activities as a parent and cheerleader, serving on the district advisory committee, and other various roles.
My top priority is ensuring a high-quality education and opportunities for each student to reach their greatest potential in an environment that recognizes and meets their needs. Our community is knit together through a shared care and investment in our students. Partnership and communication are critical to conquering challenges as a team. And, finally, we have fiscal challenges ahead of us. I want to be part of the team that helps us get to long-term budget solutions.
Students must feel seen, safe, and welcomed - have a place they belong, before they can even focus on learning. Our equity task force has identified this as a place for intentional work to happen in our district. I will share plans and advocate for resources along with strengthening and adjusting policies to support the safety of students in the district's care each day.
