I am not certain I am the best candidate for this position, but I do believe I could bring some different perspectives to the table. Our children attend the DL public schools. I have invested in children through my work for the past 10+ years through the Lakes Crisis and Resource Center, the Kinship program, running my own family childcare/early childhood education program. I am a supporter of teachers and enjoy subsitute teaching in our public school district. My faith is important to me and provides my foundation. I believe I can be a strong voice on the school board that always looks out for the BEST interest of our children. I'm for honesty and truth. And would like to be a voice for parents, teachers, staff, the community and KIDS!
Some of the priorities that I believe could be of focus: 1. Teacher retention and support for current teachers 2. Pay for staff and teachers 3. Communication between parents and the schools (partnering with families)
I believe safety is so important in kids feeling comfortable to learn in schools. Unfortunately, in today's world of guns and violence, safety is SUCH an important topic. Every day I pray with my kids on the way to drop them off for school...for the safety of our schools in Detroit Lakes. I believe being on the school board is a way to listen to staff and teachers on what they see or what needs to change at their individual schools and then taking action.

I cannot honestly say that I am the best as I do not know all the qualifications of the others who have filed. What I can say is that I have been involved with positive youth development and education in some form for over 40 years. I was employed by ISD#22 during the era when Early Childhood Education was first offered through the Community Education Program. From there, I went on to raise five children and am now the grandmother to thirteen. For many years I was a volunteer which lead to the opportunity to serve as Becker County 4-H Program Coordinator. I have seen many changes, both positive and negative, in how we are attempting to educate the next generation. I would like to be a voice for common sense and conservative values.
Foremost, I would like to see our public schools focus on the basics of education and that is to ensure that children are able to read, write and do arithmetic. This should be done in a safe, secure environment. Parental rights should not be violated as they are the ones, that have the god-ordained responsibility to train up their children. Communication between the school and the family is very important.
I would have to learn first what protocols are presently in place as I am not aware of all the safety practices. Whatever plans are considered, I believe that the question should read: How will you work with staff, teachers and parents to promote safety in our schools?
I love learning and strive to pair past experiences and understanding with new information to make informed decisions. I have acquired knowledge that prepares me for the challenges and problem-solving needs that public school systems encounter daily. My resume includes mom of two, 10 years of teaching in the K-12 system, teaching/owning/operating/growing a childcare business for eleven years and training early childhood educators. It's invigorating to be involved in organizations and activities that promote overall growth and well-being of our city, such as DLHS Academy Advisory, Rotary, and various education groups. Healthy school districts are cheerleaders for teachers and students and cultivate youth into contributing citizens.
I am ready to brainstorm ideas and questions to enhance our school district. 1.Continue actions that lead teachers and support staff to feel valued in their profession and retain them. Consistency=student success! 2.Utilize knowledge and data that describes Kindergarten readiness and how that has positive financial impact on a school district. 3.Advocate for actions that result in ‘Lakers for Life’ in all PreK-12 students; high quality rapport and involvement results in high quality learners.
Providing physical and emotional safety is necessary. I favor updates to building security and preventative procedures. Inside school, students and staff deserve to feel a sense of equal safety measures. Let’s knit together intentional and comprehensive plans that utilize mental health programs to train, model and support staff and students. Nurturing schools ensure everyone accesses opportunities to develop positive relationships at school. This will build trust and support achievement.

I was lucky enough to complete all of my education through Detroit Lakes Public Schools until my graduation with the class of 2018, and I had a great experience. My community, teachers, and mentors were always there in support of me and my education, I want to see that continue for generations of Lakers to come! Our community, teachers, and families deserve great representation through our school board, and that Is the big reason for me running. I am not a parent to students in the district, a spouse of a teacher, or a candidate coming in with a personal agenda, I am here to work for ALL of the people that live in the Detroit Lakes School District. Along with that, I am young. I will bring a fresh perspective to current issues.
1. Giving the Community a voice. I want to see our community become more involved in the education of our next generation. I would like to have a community advisory board set up for each of our district school buildings. 2. I would like to find options of how we can bring our level four students, back in our district. This means adding programming to accommodate. 3. I want to see our support staff be better compensated. This way we keep the good staff teaching our kids. Less staffing shortage.
I believe that in order for our teachers and staff to promote a safe environment in our schools, we need to equip them with the tools they need to do it. Bringing in unique trainings for staff to take part in at the start of the year. That way, not only can they promote safety in school, they can act on safety issues in a positive and SAFE manner. I would also want to review all of our buildings door locking and monitor systems for the safest technology. We can't put a price on our kids safety!
