Vadnais Heights City Mayor

The role of city mayor can vary from city to city. However, the mayor is usually the head of the city and may represent the city in front of other government bodies. A mayor also usually has a role in proposing a city budget that is approved by the city council. The budget influences the services the city provides to its residents. Mayors sometimes are voting members of city council, and in some cities the mayor is in charge of city council meetings.

I have lived in Vadnais Heights for nearly twenty years and I believe it’s time to invest in making our good local government even better. My personal journey has taught me that it takes individual work and policy change to create an equitable and just society. My education in leadership and management has equipped me with tools to get things done and navigate complex systems. My experience in business and humanitarian work has given me a broad perspective and a deep recognition that community assets exist in every stakeholder. Local government is a place where we can act together in service to one another. We can be more responsive, transparent, and inclusive of all our citizens. That’s the challenging, rewarding work of community.
Transparent, responsive, and inclusive government – We will create opportunities to engage all residents so they may participate as stakeholders. Safe Communities - A community where we know and respect our neighbors. We will generate more opportunities to connect our citizens to each other and to our government. A Clean, Green, Resilient City – We will support joining the Minnesota Green Step Cities program. Better health and safety by design, planning, public involvement, and new technology
I will invest my time and energy connecting citizens, businesses, government, and public service organizations. Events of the last few years have increased isolation and social friction. It is time that we create opportunities to see and hear one another. We can nurture respectful spaces and civil conversations focused on the common purpose of a safe and resilient community.
I am a proud husband and father of three young children, a recently retired active duty Army colonel and a combat veteran. I have a master’s degree in Public Administration and am a former Assistant Professor of American Politics at the United States Military Academy at West Point. I’m a firm believer in the concept of Servant Leadership – that leaders exist to serve others. I’ve served our nation around the world for the past 28 years. Now I teach high school JROTC, the focus of which is on motivating young people to be better citizens. I teach young people about their responsibilities as citizens and the importance of integrity, respect and accountability. I want to be a role model and bring those beliefs to our city government.
My top three priorities are ensuring public safety; delivering top-notch services, to include roads, parks, and education that provide the quality-of-life our citizens deserve; and retaining and attracting the businesses our community needs and wants.
Public safety is my top priority. As a husband and the father of three young children there is nothing I won’t do to protect them. As mayor, there should be nothing our city won’t do to protect our citizens. The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department works hard to protect our community. We as citizens must do our part as well. We must reinvigorate the neighborhood watch programs throughout our city so neighbors are looking out for neighbors, and acting as the eyes and ears for the police.
