Why are you the best candidate for this position? (750 characters)

If elected, what will your top three priorities be and why? (500 characters)

How will you work with staff and teachers to promote safety in our schools? (500 characters)

I was an active officer of the PTA at my daughter’s Elementary School in CA and served as the PTA President our last year there. I have done community organizing work with Take Action Minnesota, that has taught me how to have relationship building dialog with people of different perspectives, cultures, and backgrounds. Being an Engineer has also taught me to think out of the box and come up with creative solutions to complicated problems collaboratively as a team. I have led diverse teams, managed estimates and budgets for Engineering projects for the past 10 years. I think all of this experience will be rich with value to bring our School District up to pace with our rapidly changing community and build bridges within the community.
Safety, Equity, and Honesty in Education are my priorities. When everyone knows they belong and that the environment they learn and work in is supportive of them, the environment becomes a safer one. Individuals have differing needs for learning and growing and they need to be honored in order to create equity in our schools. Honesty in education means trusting our educators to provide an age appropriate curriculum that tackles increasingly complex issues as our children are ready for them.
All of our students, teachers and staff deserve to feel safe in the schools they are learning and working in. Safe environments do not exist in a vacuum, they are created from a culture of support and acceptance at all levels. I plan to promote a culture where staff and teachers are empowered to speak up when things are not working well and suggest ideas that we should implement. Teachers and staff will be supported when feedback is given and it will be taken into high consideration.

As a public school teacher who has worked in multiple buildings in multiple districts I believe that I have a fresh and unique perspective on education. I believe I can use my experience as well as my relationship to education to help create policies that allow Centennial Schools meet their true potential for the community. I believe that through focusing on mental health, safety, equity, and transparency the district can serve the community better than ever and create a community that makes all students, teachers, and staff feel welcomed, accepted, supported, and valued.
My top three priorities will be mental health, equity, and safety. I will work to increase access to mental health support for students and staff. I will work to implement equity policies that ensure that all students from all backgrounds are adequately supported and valued. I will work to ensure that students have a safe learning environment where they can focus on academic and personal achievement.
I believe that safety and security in the schools starts entirely with the environment and community within them. If a school's environment and sense of community are not established to uphold respect and value for everyone, then it is impossible for many students to feel safe. An increased access to mental health support will also aid by providing a way for the school to help students that feel unsafe and to help resolve conflicts between students before they can become unsafe.

I graduated through the Centennial School District in 2009. I've lived in Centerville, Minnesota since 1995. I have a Bachelor of Science in Political Science, a K-6 Teacher's License, and a Master of Science in Teaching. I have been in education since 2013. Through all my years in the community and in the district (as a student and educator), I have built strong and lasting relationships with teachers, support staff, students, families, and community members. All of this background allows me to have a unique perspective on the school district, the state of education, the treatment of teachers, and changing demographics of the community.
Some of the most important issues in our district involve safety, equity, and honesty in education. Parents and community members deserve to send their children to schools in which students feel safe in every sense of the word. I want all students, no matter their race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and/or disability, to feel welcome and receive a quality education. All students deserve access to diverse books, honest history, and NGSS science standards.
Safety in schools starts with the culture and environment of each school in the district. To create this environment resources (money, curriculum, employees) are needed. Action needs to be taken to make the district a more inclusive and equitable place for everyone. Staff and students need more resources and education on equity, inclusion, and social emotional learning. They also need more access to mental health resources, including on site social workers and mental health professionals.
