Funding public schools, K-12, with a lowering of class sizes and an increase in compensation for teachers, aides, and support staff is a top concern. Funding levels for federally-mandated services, including special ed and Title I programs is a responsibility of the state legislature a must be maintained. In addition, keeping area hospitals and clinics open in the many small towns in SD 9 ranks high along with obtaining and maintaining well-trained and paid staff for Assisted Living and adult care facilities. Third, lakes, rivers, the land, and the air we breathe, in short, a clean and healthy environment, must be a priority. The livelihood and health of Minnesotans require attention to our environment in order for us to thrive and survive.
Voting should be a simple process. Mail-in or absentee ballots should be available to all eligible voters with options to return them by mail, to drop them off at polling places, or at drop boxes. I advocate making voter registration automatic for all 18-year-olds. We have a high voter turnout rate in Minnesota which is a tribute to our existing election laws. Our election judges are trained and monitored by county auditors and have maintained a consistently high level of election security.
Legislation is necessary to fully fund public education K-12 with better salaries for teachers and support staff. It must include recruitment and hiring of teachers of color. Legislation on police officer training throughout the state that covers respectful treatment of all people, especially people of color, should be prioritized on the Senate's agenda and include the hiring of officers of color. The training of people of color who need or request schooling or training should be a priority.
Eliminate the tax on Social Security and lower taxation for small businesses. Support and increase opportunities for small businesses especially in rural areas and in economically disadvantaged metropolitan neighborhoods. Hold listening sessions in locations across Minnesota with unions and businesses to share their concerns Support efforts by the Attorney General’s office to eliminate wage theft. Educate the public about economics by way of secondary school courses and other available training.
Raise the age to purchase a gun to 21, the same as for buying alcohol. Require a background check and three day waiting period for the purchase of any weapon from any and all sources. If a background check reveals mental illness issues, prevent the person from purchasing a weapon of any kind. These goals should be on the table for discussion and implementation. Sit down and listen to the views and opinions of those on the opposite side of gun issues in an effort to reach reasonable compromises.
