My top three priorities would be passing legislation that promotes safe communities, healthy communities, and educational excellence for all learners. We can promote safe communities by funding targeted grants for recruiting new officers and by passing common sense gun violence prevention measures. We can promote healthy communities by ensuring that healthcare is affordable, reproductive rights are respected, and clean air and water is protected throughout our state. We can promote educational excellence by fully funding public education and supporting early childhood learning.
Minnesota led the nation for voter turnout in 2020, which says much about how important voting is to this state and the level of trust voters have in our system. To further promote fair and free elections, I support measures that would further protect our election workers, update campaign finance disclosures for independent expenditures, and extend the time to open and count absentee ballots.
To address health disparities, we must address the social determinants of health. We need to improve access to healthcare, but we also need strong communities that have access to healthy food, safe housing, and clean environments. To address education disparities, we must provide access to high quality, affordable, and reliable childcare and early education. We also need to recruit and retain more teachers of color and promote innovations such as full-service community schools.
Minnesota’s economy depends on the success of our workers and our businesses. To keep our economy strong, I support incentives for innovation and the green economy, improving the residency of our supply chains, and fighting corporate price gouging.
I support common-sense reforms that will save lives, including closing the private-gun-sale loophole and requiring universal background checks for the sale of all handguns and semiautomatic military-style assault weapons. I also support red-flag laws that would permit family members or law-enforcement officers to petition a court to remove firearms from someone who is a significant and imminent danger to themselves or others.
