County commissioners are the county s key policymakers. They oversee the administration of the county, set county budget, and participate in county long-range planning. County services that they oversee include a wide variety of social service and welfare programs, as well as certain public health programs. The federal government defines affordable housing if the payment does not exceed 30% of a person's gross income. In St. Peter, our county seat, a 2012 housing study showed the city is a rental center, with a limited number of 2 to 4 bedroom rental units. St. Peter does offer subsidized housing for senior/disabled. It's clear that the willingness for contractors to tackle affordable housing and the risk because of low profit margins. The housing bubble reduced overall interest
I support the work of MACO (Minnesota Association of County Officials) and AMC (Association of Minnesota Counties to monitor legislative initiatives which may act to create barriers to voting in Minnesota. Thankfully, voters in Nicollet County and throughout Minnesota have great trust in our voting system. notably because our state enjoys the highest voter turnout in America. This happens because of well-trained election workers who want to serve their community and our democracy.
Lack of continuum of care for children's mental health needs. Lack of inpatient chemical dependency treatment services, particularly for high needs of clients experiencing dual disorders. Lack of high intensity inpatient mental health services for children and adults. Lack of transportation for community members to get to work. Lack of transportation for non-emergency medical needs.
In my 24 years on the County Board, we have faced ebbs and flows in budget considerations. We have always worked to make sure that all vital services remain viable, especially in Health and Human Services, upkeep of our roads and bridges, law enforcement and legal representation for county residents, and so much more. The truth is, County government serves citizens in so many ways, I can't think of any County services that we would want to lose.
