Anoka County Commissioner District 3

County commissioners are the county s key policymakers. They oversee the administration of the county, set county budget, and participate in county long-range planning. County services that they oversee include a wide variety of social service and welfare programs, as well as certain public health programs. Learn more about the day in the life of a county commissioner in this video from the Association of Minnesota Counties. Well, I guess I have more than only three priorities. They would be ... Public Safety (we need to continue to support our Sheriff's Office in these tough times), Budgetary Responsibility (Since I have been on the County Board, the certified levy for 2020, 2021 and 2022 has not increased), Broadband Expansion (many areas of Anoka County are rural and these days accessing internet is a necessity. We have allocated $8M to resolve issues), Transportation Resolution (We are on a good path to reconstruct Hwy 65 needed for decades) and expanding available resources for mental health (As a Board Member for the Mercy Hospital Foundation, we are raising $25M to work with Anoka County and add a facility located at Unity Hospital. Great work being done
At the County level of government, we don't have the ability to legislate dollars for this purpose like at the State or Federal level, or to zone lands for this purpose like at the city level. Anoka County does not have zoning authority.

As Chair of Human Resources, I can tell you that we at the county level, do have resources that can assist those communities that are in need of additional financial assistance in many ways.
Free and fair elections are the cornerstone to maintain our democracy.

Election laws are dealt with at the State level of government, not the County level. For voter integrity however, I would like to see voter ID implemented, but with an ID system that was offered free of charge to residents, eliminating all economic issue to obtain an ID to vote.

Anoka County offers a voter drop box in the government center, available during working hours. We also do an audit after very election.
Mental Health issues are on the rise, especially having to deal with COVID.

In Anoka County we are increasing programs in our jail system to help with those coming through our system. There is more awareness these days to react to mental health instead of just locking it up.

I also serve on the Board of Directors for the Mercy Hospital Foundation and we are in the process of raising $25M for an Mental Health addition to Unity Hospital. As Chair of Human Services, Anoka County will assist.
In Anoka County, we don't cut the budget at the expense of providing less or decreased service. Reductions in our budget result from finding better efficiencies.

To answer the question though, Public Safety these days is number one. We have unfortunately seen an attack on public safely in recent years, so as a County Commissioner, I need to support our Sheriffs Office.

Also, as Chair of Human Services, we provide half of the services offered by Anoka County and obviously needs preservation.
