We have many pressing needs before us, including education, healthcare, and climate. As a teacher, I’ve seen how education can transform lives and there is no greater investment we can make. When we invest in our children, we are investing in our collective future. Healthcare is equally fundamental, and access to quality affordable healthcare should be a right of all Minnesotans. Climate change is a third pressing challenge. As a city councilor, I’ve had to help address the effects it is having on our communities. From costly flooding to changing crop seasons, we are experiencing its impacts on our health, infrastructure, and economy every day. We need bold policies that address the underlying causes.
Free and secure elections are fundamental to our democracy. Every voter deserves equal access to the ballot box and to cast their vote without interference. I will oppose laws designed to make voting more difficult such as voter ID laws or reduced polling place hours. I support legislation that will restore and strengthen the protections of the Voting Rights Act, like the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. We must also push back against dangerous disinformation about our elections.
We can do a lot. Racial disparities show that we must increase equity in access to healthcare, quality education, clean air and water, and reduce the gap in homeownership. Because of existing racial disparities, I also support restoring the right to vote for those who have served their time, legalizing recreational marijuana and the expungement of records for nonviolent offenders, and Drivers Licenses For All. These steps can make our justice system fairer, safer, and more efficient.
Inflation hurts working families and seniors living on fixed incomes. We must help by investing in affordable housing, healthcare, childcare, and targeted tax relief for low income folks. Families and small business owners need Paid Family Leave, and we need robust job training and retention programs to support our state’s skilled workforce. We also need to expand rural broadband access and begin the work to transition to clean energy sources that will sustain our economy into the future.
Our children deserve to feel safe while they are at school. Each of us - whether we are at our place of worship, our work, or just going to the grocery store - we all deserve the freedom to feel safe as we go about our day. This is why I agree with the overwhelming majority of Minnesotans who support common sense gun safety measures such as universal background checks for all gun sales, enhanced checks for 18-21 year olds, and embedding social workers into local public safety departments.
