What is the most important issue facing your Single Member District and how do you intend to address it?
How will you engage with residents to be an effective Commissioner, especially reaching those who are unfamiliar with the role and value of ANCs?
Is there a question you wish we had asked? If so, what is the question and how would you answer it?
As a three-time Mayoral appointee under three administrations, I have experience in navigating DC government agencies. I have a strong development and construction background, having been in the industry for nearly 20 years. I am experienced in managing large, complex, multi-use development projects. I have worked on several of the city’s high profile projects including Nationals Baseball Stadium, Washington Convention Center, DC Public Schools, Southeast Tennis Center and Eastern Market. As a previous business owner who has owned and operated businesses in the District of Columbia, I understand the struggles of businesses in the district. As a homeowner in the West End, I want to make my neighborhood safer, cleaner and work to ensure repairs are completed in a more timely manner.
Our neighborhood has lost vital business and commerce due to the ongoing pandemic. It’s important that we restore these now empty storefronts with business that serve our communities needs. In addition, we have no organized efforts to promote improvement in a responsible manner. I intend to spearhead the effort to ensure the future of our neighborhood remains safe clean and with businesses to benefit the community.
Equally important our neighborhood infrastructure is in dire need of repair. Our sidewalks bulge and are crumbling. Our beautiful Francis field needs some much need attention and our dog park needs a shaded area for owners to sit when watching dogs play.
With current ANC meetings now being virtual, it’s more important than ever that our community is able to express its voice to their elected officials. I Intend to work with local newsletters, publication as well promote awareness of the many ways constituents can contact their elected officials. As well as ensure that meetings are promoted across multiple source. I will make myself available to attend any organization meeting to hear their concerns.
No hay repuesta.
Francis Field is set to undergo a long-awaited restoration and redevelopment project that will determine how residents of our single member district and its neighboring communities utilize this important and valuable public space. It’s crucial that the community engagement process takes into account the needs and concerns of a wide range of constituencies, including homeowners whose properties may be impacted by the redevelopment as well as non-homeowners who use the field for sports and other recreational activities. As Commissioner, I intend to proactively engage with the community to ensure that the final plans for the project are based upon resident needs and input. I will also work to ensure that the permitting process for group activities is clear and fair, and that a plan is developed to ensure proper care and maintenance of the facilities after the redevelopment project is complete.
One of the reasons I’m running is to improve communication between the ANC and residents, with a focus on transparency. I believe ANCs should work to ensure that residents are notified of the issues coming before the Commission, are given sufficient time to engage with the Commission about those issues, and are provided a clear and simple process for meaningfully engaging with the Commission should they choose to do so. In my view, this represents a basic foundation of good governance in a democratic system. Unfortunately, many ANCs operate opaquely, providing the bare minimum notice of meetings required by law. Additionally, ANC agendas are often worded using vague language that is difficult to decipher. If elected, I’ll work with my fellow Commissioners to reshape this aspect of ANC operations so that it’s easy for residents to get involved. This includes reforming the ANC’s community outreach strategies and implementing a constituent correspondence system.
I wish you had asked what I think the biggest issue in politics today is, and my answer would be the tone and tenor of our political discourse. Our politics have become toxic, including at the ANC level. This is fueling a deterioration in public trust in government institutions and an uptick in threats of political violence. Commissioners have an opportunity to model ethical, transparent and constructive political behavior (rather than lean into the worst tendencies allowed by our current political context). If elected, I will work hard to build trust within the community and to conduct the public’s business in a respectful and productive manner, even when dealing with the difficult and sometimes contentious issues that come before the Commission. That approach includes proactive engagement of residents with different perspectives on issues, and relying on a decision-making process that favors data and evidence over ideology.
