Dangerous roads. Georgia Ave in particular can be incredibly dangerous as a main city thoroughfare where there are many pedestrians and cyclists, often with families, visiting the various small shops, the larger businesses like Walmart, or crossing Georgia from residential area to residential area. Then throughout the SMD, which is primarily small street residential, speeding is a constant issue, particularly around Paul charter school where students walk daily. We need to engage with DDOT to push for greater traffic calming measures, safer intersections, slower side streets, and enhanced/sustained access to public transit. 4B05 is a mile from the nearest MetroRail stations. This will entail citizen engagement and working in partnership with the 4th district police station and local businesses to ensure a fair, equitable, and safe set of solutions.
Social media is one method to engage with residents, but I recognize the majority of residents may not use it. As a first time ANC rep I plan to talk to neighbors more about how they want to engage. I want to meet them where they expect, keeping any obstacles from their communication with me to a minimum. When I am involved with the larger 4B commission I want to know that I’m actually representing the diverse community of 4B05 as much as possible and not only the loudest of voices. We have a population in 4B05 that consists of a fantastic tapestry of backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, languages, and beliefs. I intend to make myself available in whatever ways best suits all those interested in lending their voices to the improvement of the neighborhood.
What do I love most about my neighborhood?

The stories. The history. The people. In what was once farmland in rolling hills, the neighborhood was first developed over many decades a century ago. I love hearing the stories from neighbors about how their families have lived here for 60, 70, 80 years. It brings to light such a deep cultural history of our neighborhood. Similarly, I love hearing the stories of those who decided to uproot their families and move into the neighborhood, learning about their own paths that led them here and thinking about all that we have in common together. My hope is that we will continue to see more connections made, more friendships, more community.
