Bachelors of Arts from the Ohio State University and a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Michigan.
The top two issues motivating me to serve on the State Board of Education are teacher retention and providing all students and families an excellent and equitable education. The District of Columbia currently has the highest rate of educator turnover
in the country, and we must improve teacher working conditions and student learning conditions to retain our most effective teachers. Every school should provide all students and families with a stable school culture that allows
them to receive a high-quality education. Our schools should be places of curiosity, critical thinking, and joy for all learners. To do this, we need to provide all students with experienced professionals who are able to effectively meet their individualized needs.
I am entering my tenth year as an educator in the US public education system and my ninth year teaching in DC. I am a nationally-certified teacher with experience teaching elementary, middle, and high school students. I am starting my seventh year as a US Government, AP Government,
and DC History teacher at Capital City Public Charter School.
I am a committed advocate for numerous public education
issues as an organizer and advocacy fellow with EmpowerEd. I have consistently testified at SBOE and Council meetings over the last five years to improve teacher working conditions,
support and retain teachers, and advance leadership opportunities for teachers of color. I am
also an outspoken advocate for youth voice and student safety concerns.
My top priority as a State Board member would be to elevate the voices of students, parents, and teachers to advance equity in DC education. Our parents, students, and families deserve our public education system to be accountable to them and I will make sure I am accessible to all stakeholders by reviving the Ward 1 education council, responding to constituent concerns, and being present and visible in the community. Our schools work best when students, parents, and teachers partner with each other to advance opportunity and growth for students. I believe the interests of all three stakeholders are compatible with each other and I will do my best to engage in continual outreach and regular contact with everyone in our school communities.
