A working single parent, native Washingtonian who has exposure to a cross section of cultures, due to my work in iDCPS and Higher Education, International Development, working as a community development specialist. I am a people person, with a complex understanding of the community issues: housing, safety and education (DCPS and Higher Ed). In addition, my background includes a working knowledge of policy at the local and federal level.
Safety and housing (often these two issues are intertwined): by engaging and listening to the concerns of residents, dissecting the information and ensuring their concerns are heard.
In addition, by sharing with residents the issues in totality and by breaking down issues, concerns, mis-understandings and sharing what are believed root causes to a concern, for all sides of the issue to hear one another. Often it is not always the issue, it is communication or lack thereof which is the first hurdle to better understanding.
Asking for opportunities to get past poor communication, complaining or ignoring issues and breaking cause and effect, which will lead to discussing ways forwards together.
Because, only when all sides understand each other can we hear one another, move in a productive manner (when facts and solid data is in hand), to better the community.
Breaking down the issues, ensure all hear one another, to include concerns and long term effects.
Often misunderstandings come about due to not understanding needs. Constituents and government each have goals and needs, often it is one entity talking over the other. Everyone needs to clearly understand the other, to move forward and elements bias or preconceived notions .
But, often it is when there is disenfranchisement and the feeling of not being heard, people give up and stop listening. Everyone needs to be at the “table” and all need to be heard, understood and ask questions. It is how we grow as a society, when we are understood (whether agreeing or disagreeing, conversation, education and enlightenment brings communities together).
Why are you running for SMD ANC 3F02?
Because it is my hope to engage and represent those who see themselves as voiceless, disenfranchised and seeking information and knowledge, as to the process of any given matter. When residents/constituents cannot find rationale or reason to policy, issues or concerns which affect them or a process—when and for those who feel they are not being heard nor represented.
Note: voicelessness and disenfranchisement is not a class, gender or socioeconomic issue; it is a human result of not hearing or listening and not understanding. Therefore shutting out or shutting down. We are a community which represents people to people, community and neighborly concepts while working together. It is when we work together, humanity is at its best.
