There are many challenges facing public education in the District of Columbia, including the sequelae on our education system from COVID, meaningful family engagement, the conversation around student proficiency, inequitable service (OST, mental and behavioral health, etc.) availability and teacher retention. If elected, I would hope to be impactful on each of these issues, with a focus on parent advocacy and engagement.
I am a native Washingtonian that has lived in Ward 5 for more than 10 years. I am a working mother, a wife and a proud product of the public school system. I am a member of PAVE’s Ward 5 PLE and am extremely proud of our successful advocacy in the areas of OST, including creating a community driven Strategic Plan to expand programs. My professional expertise is in banking and finance, and it has been my honor to share financial literacy with DC families, empowering them to make sound financial decisions. I am currently a member of the DC Historic Preservation Review Board, a role that allows me to directly impact our collective education as it relates to local and National history. Lastly, as a mother, I am the first educator of my son.
It is necessary, and good practice, to engage all stakeholders in education as it relates to policy making and implementation. I intend to ensure all voices are heard, with a specific focus on families as they have the biggest investment in the educational system - our children. Families should be engaged in an intentional and holistic way with the goal of providing an environment that is most suitable to learning and support that equips parents to be successful advocates for their children.

1). I want to fight for a school system that works for every student. I think the surest way to do this is to strengthen and support our by-right schools, so that every student is guaranteed access to a high-quality, well-rounded education in a safe, healthy building. To do this, we need comprehensive, cross-sector planning. And 2). I want to represent ALL Ward 5 school communities on the State Board of Education and before the Council of DC and city agencies to fight for the supports and resources that they need to serve students well.
I have advocated for Ward 5 schools for several years, building relationships of trust with school communities and working with them to address challenges and celebrate successes. I will show up, be helpful, and fight doggedly for Ward 5 schools. Professionally, I am a research analyst specializing in assessing the evidence on a given topic and distilling it into easily understandable and actionable information. I will apply this skill to the challenges facing DC schools to pursue best practices.
I believe parents are experts on their children, and teachers are experts in learning. Both want the best for students. We need to foster mutual trust between teachers and parents. And we need to respect, fairly compensate, and support the well-being of teachers so that they can best meet the needs of their students. I will continue to converse regularly with students, parents, and teachers as I work in and alongside school communities.

Many students, particularly low income and special education students, are behind due to Covid school closures. We must address ALL of the unintended consequences of Pandemic School policies. DC has some high performing schools and also very low performing schools. I would like to help get to root causes and provide families with many more excellent public and public charter schools to choose from.
I have been an educator for the past 20 years. I have experience as a classroom teacher, a teacher of students with learning disabilities, and am currently a teacher of students who are blind and visually impaired. As a parent, I navigated the special education system on behalf of my son who is dyslexic. He is now an adult who serves in the U.S. Army and is an Army Ranger.
My experience in many facets of education has provided the opportunity to do exactly this task over the course of my career. Communication, really listening, and providing transparency are all keys to collaboration.
