Hiring and retaining good employees is difficult. We need forward thinking ways to attract good employees. Providing adequate and affordable jail space is a growing need. The expense of sending inmates to other counties and finding ways to meet DOC requirements is an ongoing concern. I’m a vocal commissioner on fixing and maintaining county roads, There are roads farther down on the long-range plan than I wish they were, but we are making steady progress. For years I’ve sat in on the Behavioral Health Collaborative addressing gaps in mental health services. I pledge to continue working on these very important concerns.
Families and individuals can't be stable without having safe and steady housing. I will continue to encourage the county to work closely with other agencies to assure we have as many homes and apartments as possible. We are fortunate to have County and City housing and Redevelopment Authorities (HRA) that are progressive in seeking every new housing opportunity.
I had the opportunity to serve as an Election Judge for Lammers Township before I became a County Commissioner. Minnesota uses paper ballots and preserves those paper ballots until well past the date that elections are certified. By doing so our election officials can provide a rock solid audit trail that supports the information provided by the electronic tabulation machines. I will continue to work hard to assure that laws ensure safe and secure elections.
If you talk to our Social Workers, Law Enforcement Officers, Probation or the Cour ts it's clear the most common reason for people landing in the system is because of addictions to alcohol or drugs. The County Board must stay dedicated to addressing this public health crisis by providing the proper staffing levels to the departments and agencies that work to stop or squelch this social ill.
We have made cuts in years past and may have trimmed as much as possible. I would tend to ask our department chairs for their input as they know the areas of greatest need. Before making drastic cuts I would ask the board to look at all aspects of the budget.
