Wilkin County Commissioner District 4

County commissioners are the county s key policymakers. They oversee the administration of the county, set county budget, and participate in county long-range planning. County services that they oversee include a wide variety of social service and welfare programs, as well as certain public health programs. The first of my top three priorities as the elected Commissioner for District 4 of Wilkin County would be to ensure fiscal responsibility for Wilkin County by making sound decisions pertaining to the budget and all sources of revenue. The other two priorities are to support the needs of the Youth and Senior Citizens that live in this community. Youth deserve a safe, encouraging place to grow up so they will develop into productive adults in the future. Many Senior Citizens are on a fixed income so when property taxes go up, it becomes very difficult for them to remain home owners and live in the houses they own and love.
Affordable Housing for all citizens of Wilkin County would also be a top issue that I would actively support. The Wilkin County Health and Family Service Department does an amazing job of helping families in need of housing. This department needs to be sufficiently funded to do their jobs. The county should support the Breckenridge HRA, public housing authority, which provides affordable, quality housing for low/moderate income families.
I fully support Minnesota’s laws that ensure all eligible voters’ access to their right to vote. As a County Commissioner, I will support all county efforts to make voting options available to eligible voters and voting locations safe and secure for voters and election officials. As an elected official, I will take an oath to execute my duties to the best of my abilities and to follow all laws and to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.
Today our mental health systems are going through some very trying times. COVID and the pandemic caused major stress and mental issues for many citizens. As a County Commissioner, I will strongly support our Health and Family Services Department with the resources needed to help our citizens recover. If a recession hits our country, some people may lose their jobs and health insurance. Through the Health and Family Services Department, Wilkin County will support and meet their needs.
I believe all departments in the county provide essential services to the citizens of Wilkin County. If budget cuts are needed during my term in office, I would request cost reduction input from all departments rather than eliminating an essential service. This would include the consideration of the reduction of salaries for the Commissioners. I would not be in favor of cutting a department.
