I have worked for the Anoka Sheriff’s Office for over 24 years. I have a firm grasp of the complexities of our office. I also have a full understanding of the services we provide as well as the phenomenal staff who provides them. I have served in command level leadership for the past 11 years. I am the commander of the largest division, the patrol division. I am responsible for law enforcement contract services to 8 of the 21 communities in Anoka County, which have a combined population of 80,000. I oversee a budget of over 10 million dollars and have been under budget every year while ensuring to provide our staff with the equipment and technology needed to safely serve our communities. This experience sets me apart.
Public safety will always be my top priority. In the chaos today, we need experienced leadership with a reputation of maintaining law and order. Community is another priority. As a lifelong resident of Anoka County, building relationships and bringing people together will be my focus. My final priority is hiring staff with character. I call this hiring for “heart.” Focusing on heart and character to ensure we are providing the best people to provide the best service to Anoka County.
The biggest challenges we are facing as an organization are hiring, and motivating and building up our staff who have been criticized and under the microscope for years. As for hiring, I will work with the County Board to ensure we provide competitive wages. As Sheriff, I will ensure we have a statewide recognized positive work environment with unique opportunities that will attract applicants. I will reaffirm my commitment to our staff and share our successes with our community.
I think the Sheriff’s Office does a great job in providing information to our community as it relates to activities and important alerts. I think we can do better at “branding” our office to the priorities I will bring as Sheriff. Focusing on CommUNITY where we celebrate our shared values and understand we are stronger the closer we become. Focusing on those initiatives and maintaining the public’s trust through transparency in every thing we do. I will provide monthly updates as Sheriff.
I am a servant leader and am honored to serve. My work at the Sheriff’s Office has never been about me, it has been about what areas I can best serve the office and the community. Servant leadership is a calling, I feel called to run for Sheriff. From day one in the office, I will support and defend the constitutional rights of all individuals in Anoka County, while providing authentic and proven servant leadership. I will work tirelessly for Anoka County and ensure I am a people’s Sheriff.
Experience in leadership.

Over the last eleven years I have led the Coon Rapids Police Department in reducing crime by 50%. The city is both dramatically safer and has successfully enhanced the feeling of safety for our residents. In 2021, Brooklyn Park experienced over 200 shooting incidents; Coon Rapids experienced 10. Meanwhile, our officers know that even 10 is too many and are all committed to moving that number to zero. They are highly motivated because they are encouraged and supported by me and my team to be the difference. Our citizens have responded in kind by strongly supporting their work. I am proud of the culture of CRPD and will bring the same to the Sheriff's office.
1) Reduce crime in Anoka County. There are crime pressures from other counties that border us. We will vigorously work to protect our residents from that pressure.

2) Every employee of the Anoka County Sheriff's Office will be valued for their individual contributions to our mission of service.

3) Enhance the connection between the Sheriff's office and the citizens we serve. We will be open, honest and ethical at all times.

The biggest challenge facing all law enforcement is resisting the urge to let negative voices of detractors affect our passion for serving. The entire Anoka County Sheriff's Office will hear a consistent drumbeat of support from me and every member of our team to remind ourselves of the good people we swore an oath to serve. Difference-making law enforcement services will only come from staff who love what they do. My message will always be to perform great work and have fun while doing it!
The Sheriff's office has a robust process for informing the public about crime, which is great. In addition, I will always make myself personally available to speak about any incident of serious concern just as I had done as the Coon Rapids Police Chief. I will be open and honest about our work, to include those times when things might not go as well as we would have hoped. Law Enforcement is hard work fraught with peril. No matter what, our ethics will be clear and visible every day.
I have a bottom up philosophy for leadership. It wouldn't matter what programs, processes or training staff receives if they don't believe they are valued and their opinions respected. Dismissed or undervalued staff can't perform their work in a manner that preserves the public's trust. Yes, there will be significant pressure from me to perform their best every day. Simultaneously, they will feel the support of a Sheriff who will be in service to them each step along the way.
