Through my 19 years in law enforcement I listened, watched and learned from some of the best of what it takes to be a great leader. I believe there needs to be a change in the Sheriffs Office. I have always stood up and fought for my beliefs and values. I have honesty, integrity, and a good moral compass. Through my career I have collaborated with great leaders who have taken the time to mentor and teach me the leadership skills I have acquired today. In fact, when I was employed as a Deputy for Mahnomen County, I was selected by the Sheriff two times to manage any emergency that may have arisen while the Sheriff and Chief Deputy were out of county and unavailable. I genuinely care about the safety and security of the county
My first priority would be is to bring consistency and communication back to the Sheriffs office. I would also let the deputies grow by making training easier to obtain and letting them take ownership in the office. My second priority would be fiscal responsibility. In these uncertain times, I would distinguish between wants and needs and prioritize the need. My third priority would be to bring the Sheriffs Office to a new realm of law enforcement and invest in investigating cybercrimes.
One of the biggest challenges as of now is the hiring pool for law enforcement is Shallow. When I was hired on as a deputy for Becker County ten years ago, there was approximately 75 applicants competing, now the application list is approximately four applicants per posting. It is very important to retain the deputies we have. Another challenge is the unknown economic time we are facing. It is ever so important to budget wisely to prevent rising taxes.
Transparency is crucial in today’s world and following the guidelines of data privacy, I would implement press releases and keep the community updated with social media. I would have an open-door policy for the public to answer any questions that they have.
I would lead by example. I would not require anybody to perform a task that I would not do myself. I am hands on, but not to the point of micromanagement. I am not insecure so I would encourage all the employees to grow and better themselves and this would lead to better service to the county. I am compassionate and care about the needs of the county and that will always be my priority.
