I believe I am the best candidate for the position because of my education, experience in law enforcement and my record of getting the job done. I will show Nicollet County residents what transparency looks like, that we are currently lacking. Our county has evolved over the past 20 years and the Sheriff’s office has failed to do so. We have failed to reach out to both of our universities within the county as well as our Somali and Hispanic populations. What we are doing is not working, our drug overdoses continue to rise and crime is trending the wrong direction.

Our resources need to be directed toward our problems. Individuals running our criminal justice system as well as individuals violating the law need to be held accountable.
1. Illegal drugs- specifically methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl. These poisons are killing our youth at alarming rates and it needs to stop. Drug dealers need prison not programs.

2. Spending- because a ton of your tax dollars are being wasted on needless things and programs..

3.Community outreach- The Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office has failed to evolve with the county and meet the needs of communities within our county. Human trafficking should also be a priority.

Stopping the revolving door of our Nicollet County Jail. Transparency should include the Sheriff’s Office as well as the county attorney’s office and our judges who are releasing individuals that are a threat to public safety. I believe one of the ways of addressing these issues is to show the public who is responsible for putting offenders back in the street. Informing the communities within our county of our plan to fight drugs and crime.

Bail reform is also a huge failure!
We currently do not have full transparency. There should be more press releases and availability of Sheriff’s office staff through public forums and public education presentations. Taxpayers should be informed of what their money is being spent on. Our budget now exceeds five million dollars a year, which is ridiculous. Our budget has doubled yet our population has barely increased. Does that make sense to you? Our Jail is the same size since it’s construction in 1984.. we need accountability!
I lead by example ,and have been a leader in school, the military and entire my law enforcement career. I would never ask a staff member to do anything I would not do myself. I have the life experience and law enforcement experience to know what should be expected of staff. I treat all staff respectfully and professionally. Currently, this is also not happening at the Nicollet County Sheriff’s office! Staff need to know they are appreciated and rewarded for effective and accurate work.

I feel that I have the Law Enforcement experience to continue providing quality Law Enforcement services to the citizens of Nicollet County. I am a lifetime resident of the county with 37 years of Law Enforcement experience. 20 years as the current Sheriff, 11 years as a North Mankato Police Officer, and 6 years as a Jailer/Dispatcher for Nicollet County Sheriff's Office. I have built many relationships with different organizations, local fire departments, Police Departments, township boards, schools, local businesses, and residents during my career. Those connections allow me to be responsive to the needs of the county.
1. Keeping community trust- Continuing to work with community partners at public events we currently are active in. National Night out, vehicle fairs, school presentations, mock crash presentation for students, fishing with a cop, and scam presentations. 2. Active drug enforcement- Continue to have deputy assigned to Drug task force to solely work on drug enforcement activity. 3. Staffing- Work to recruit staffing to fill vacant positions which is affecting most agencies.
Staffing is a large challenge for many agencies currently. Fewer people are going to school for Law Enforcement and recruiting will be tough. Current staff are our best recruiters into the profession by showing those interested the great work they provide to the citizens. We do also reach out to the local schools and colleges when positions are open as well.
I feel that our office is transparent with the work we currently do but, we can always improve. Our annual report is published on-line, and news releases of interest are sent out when needed. We are working on budgeting for a body cam program which will also be implemented in the near future. Annually we make several presentations to public groups on the operations of the Sheriff's Office and other educational presentations.
My leadership style is to allow staff to do the job to the best of their ability. I strive to provide the training, education, and guidance to everyone to make them successful in the job they do. My ask of all staff is for them to treat others how they would want to be treated. I support my staff in the decisions they make working professionally and respectfully with the public.
