Guía de Votantes

Brooklyn Center City Mayor

The role of city mayor can vary from city to city. However, the mayor is usually the head of the city and may represent the city in front of other government bodies. A mayor also usually has a role in proposing a city budget that is approved by the city council. The budget influences the services the city provides to its residents. Mayors sometimes are voting members of city council, and in some cities the mayor is in charge of city council meetings.

I have served on the city council since 2015. I was the first woman of color elected to the council and I have helped to make our city more inclusive of community input and more responsive to our community’s needs. I have spent the last 7+ years learning about the operations of city governance. I understand the importance of ethical processes and of nuanced, deliberative decision-making. I have built trusting relationships with city staff and have helped establish more inclusive partnerships with community members. I listen to understand all perspectives and I make decisions based on data and feasibility as well as empathy, equity and humility. We find solutions by asking good questions, by listening to one another, and by working together.
Collaborative improvements to Public Safety that include all stakeholders and reduce crime in our community. Continued Economic Development that diversifies our housing stock, builds our tax base and meets the needs of our residents. Community Engagement and Workforce Development that aligns efforts between city and neighborhood organizations. These priorities will be accomplished with Intentional Communication, Community Outreach, Strategic Partnerships, Targeted Resources & Tangible Outcomes
I will ensure we have a diverse group of stakeholders at the table to discuss any needed reforms to public safety. I will work with city staff on the Emerging Brooklyn Center initiative to address community needs. I will support hiring of police officers to fill vacant positions that are needed for proactive policing such as the street crimes unit. I will continue to support and advocate for programs that support social, emotional, economic, mental and physical health for our community members.
