School board members oversee the care, management, and control of schools within the district. This includes hiring, firing, and overseeing superintendents, who manage the day-to-day affairs of the district. They also set budgets and policies that affect students in classes and other activities that affect the students’ wellbeing and education.

I believe I am the best candidate for this position because I have the experience, education, and resources needed to:

*put our students' learning and well-being first

*support WAPS educators and staff

*increase safety and security of students, educators, staff, and visitors to school buildings

*collaborate with Winona community members/groups/organizations and educational institutions as a way to offer our students the best education as we prepare them for success

*advocate for WAPS and Winona community members through building relationships and trust

*increase communication between our Winona community and the School Board and school district

*make sure that students/families/educators/community have a voice in the school district
If elected, I will work to:

*Prepare students for a wide range of opportunities in and after HS: improve academics and the arts, create sustainable mental health and social-emotional supports, improve safety in schools and community, offer robust extra-curriculars based on student interests

*Improve communication between community and WAPS so that all students' needs are identified and met.

*Fiscal responsibility and accountability so that students, educators, and community achieve success.
I will work to ensure that the district have "a comprehensive and strategic approach to violence prevention that includes evidence-based interventions that promote positive school climate, social and emotional competence and student mental health. I will work to improve relationships and increase trust among students, families, educators, and staff.

I will work to more fully implement Restorative Practices.

My 34 years of experience as a school counselor and principal at both the middle and high school are the foundation of why I’m running for a second term on the WAPS school board. I have experience with managing a large budget, staffing, scheduling, curriculum and evaluations. My background has provided me numerous hours of staff development in current educational issues including diversity, inclusion and equity. I understand the complexity of developing and overseeing a large budget and all of the various funding streams that go into having a balanced budget. I value the staff that provide quality education and a healthy environment to learn and grow. I listen to the community and staff when considering issues that are before the board.
1. Continue to be fiscally responsible by understanding what goes into a balanced budget and knowing all the components required to keep a watchful eye on the districts financial health. 2. Having a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum that offers challenging courses for all of our students. Providing pathways for access to the curriculum for all students. 3. Providing a safe and welcoming environment for students and staff to thrive in and our community to be proud of.
Physically assure that each building has safety measures that are current and understood by all staff. Talk with students about safety measures that are existing in the building. Emotionally have appropriate systems in place to address health and safety needs of our students and staff. Work with district and community agencies to provide social and emotional supports for both students and staff. Provide staff development to staff of how to provide additional support to students when needed.
