I am absolutely committed to the students and families in this District! As a long time RPS teacher who stays deeply involved with our schools, an experienced RPS School Board member, a university professor who teaches teachers and a parent and grandparent of students in our school district, I have a deep investment in making our schools the best in the state--for my family and for everyone's family. School Board members must understand governance, policy, budget and teaching and learning: all of these are critically important and complicated. I've been involved in developing our school district's Strategic Plan: Planning for Purpose. I'm confident the vision and roadmap this plan involves will provide the best education for all.
First: schools must be safe places, physically and emotionally, for every student. All students, parents and guardians need to be confident that our District continues to provide safe schools. Second: research is clear that children don't learn if they feel stressed, traumatized or excluded. In order to help children succeed academically, they need to feel welcome and included, regardless of race, ethnicity, financial status or gender. Third: academics are critical! We will do better!
No one knows what needs to be done differently in our schools than the staff in our schools. They interact with our students and families every single day. We need to continue to invite them to inform decisions about what their building needs and to provide them the resources they tell us are warranted. Our teachers and support staff are invaluable in a hundred different ways.
