Información Biográfica

What is the most important issue facing your Single Member District and how do you intend to address it?

How will you engage with residents to be an effective Commissioner, especially reaching those who are unfamiliar with the role and value of ANCs?

Is there a question you wish we had asked? If so, what is the question and how would you answer it?

The recent census created new boundaries for my SMD and created 4E and 4E03. Although Uptown Main Street businesses along 14th Street are no longer in my SMD, I will continue to work diligently with 4E and the Uptown Main Street to facilitate the creation of a safe and thriving commercial corridor. I will also continue to serve on the WMATA Northern Bus Garage team to ensure positive outcomes from the redevelopment project. I also am committed to ensuring the Heleos/Dance Loft on 14 affordable housing development comes to fruition. I desire to keep the community at the table as the plan unfolds for robust retail and housing at varied levels of income (market rate, 60%AMI and 30% AMI), including family-sized units.

In addition, traffic calming measures are continuously requested. I will continue to support neighborhood traffic calming measures to make our streets, sidewalks and bike lanes safer for all.

I am running for re-election (served as 4C02 Commissioner) to keep residents informed and to facilitate communication between community members, our Ward 4 Councilmember, elected officials, and DC govt. agencies.

I am a relationship builder who respects and listens to all people. As your Commissioner for the past 8 years, I have brought people with different views together in order to find solutions that work for all. I promise to continue to be accessible, available, and active in seeking input on issues facing our neighborhood.

For those residents who are unfamiliar with the role/value of ANCs, I encourage residents to take advantage of my availability in the neighborhood for conversations and meet-ups. ANC 4E will be a newly formed commission and I will work to ensure that we are accessible and responsive to residents. As your ANC Commissioner, I will continue to work over the next 2 years to address neighbors’ concerns and facilitate solutions. For more, see mariabarryanc.com.
The question I would love to answer is: “Why do you want to be an ANC Commissioner?” I love my neighborhood and I love my neighbors because our neighborhood boasts beautiful homes, small businesses, diverse and engaged residents, and well-loved green spaces. It's also going through a lot of changes and growing challenges related to safety and quality of life, and I desire to continue to be involved in shaping these changes for the betterment of 16th Street Heights. As a community servant, I believe I have the leadership and networking skills needed to help the DC government work for all neighbors, and I wish to promote equity and livability for all.
